Purse-snatching matched pattern

Nassau County Police Department detectives say that a purse-snatching in Baldwin in late November matched a pattern of crimes in the area.

According to detectives, 56-year-old Maureen Herman was in her driveway, getting out of her vehicle, when a black man grabbed her from behind. The subject attempted to yank her handbag off her shoulder, but fled the scene after she resisted.

The subject was described as a man in his early 20s, 5 feet 7 to 5 feet 8 with a thin build. He was clean-shaven and wearing a blue or black sweatshirt with white lettering on the front, dark blue jeans and a dark-colored baseball cap.

According to Detective Lt. Kevin Smith, “Over the past three to four weeks, a pattern of purse-snatching robberies have occurred.” Smith went on to name the communities where similar attempts have been made.

Police believe a pair of young men, working in unison out of a four-door sedan, possibly gray, have perfected a particular method of purse-snatching. “They find a vulnerable target,” Smith explained. “They follow the target home, where they push her to the ground and grab her purse and cell phone.”

Although Smith noted that “no weapons have been displayed,” county police urge women to use caution. “Try to be more vigilant about what’s going on behind you,” Smith said. Police also suggest making sure your home and driveway are well lit, and staying in your car if you see a suspicious vehicle. In the event of an attack, Smith said, it’s always best to give up your purse and cell phone without a fight. “Give it up and call the police,” he advised.
