Last Saturday, just before 2 a.m., police were called to the Franklin Square Spanish Restaurant at 974 Hempstead Turnpike, a familiar local eatery with pool tables, TV screens tuned to sports events and a bar. When they arrived, police said, they found two men, one 29 and one 30, who had suffered head injuries. Marvin Pacheco, 19, and Claros Danery, 23, who had been playing pool, got involved in an altercation with the two older men, according to police. It was unclear whether Danery and the underaged Pacheco were drinking at the time.
During the argument, police said, Pacheco and Danery attacked their older victims with empty bottles, striking them both in the head, causing deep cuts and moving employees to call 911. Pacheco and Danery, who share a residence on Doherty Avenue in Elmont, were both arrested and charged with second-degree assault and possession of a dangerous weapon, according to police.
The victims were taken to Winthrop University Hospital, where they were treated and released.
Pacheco and Danery were arraigned in district court in Hempstead on Sunday.
Also on Sunday, police in Elmont apprehended a local man who they said had just burglarized his neighbors. Richard Elder, a 27-year-old Elmont man, was taken into custody after two homes one on Fieldmere Street and one on Gotham Avenue were robbed. Unknown items were taken from both residences, and police responded to investigate. After interviewing neighbors and eyewitnesses, they arrested Elder at the scene, and found him to be in possession of several stolen goods from both homes.
Elder was charged with two counts each of burglary and possession of stolen property.
Police are still investigating an armed robbery in Elmont at the start of the long weekend, last Thursday night at 8:40 p.m. Two armed men wearing dark clothing entered the Vero and Vero Mexican Deli and demanded cash from the register, according to police. The men also stole wallets and a cell phone from people in the deli, marched them at gunpoint into the basement and left them there. They fled with an undetermined amount of cash in an unknown direction, police said. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
