Be a life-saver, donate blood

Posted
The first blood drive will be held on Wednesday, September 17 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. at Winthrop's Community Outreach Center, 101 Mineola Blvd. the second one will be held on September 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at Winthrop's Bethpage location, 700 Hicksville Road.New blood donor guidelines made effective May 2002 eliminated 25 percent of our community's blood supply that was formerly imported from Europe. But, local demands for blood are on the rise. Each day close to 2,000 people in our community-including men, women, newborn babies and many more-need blood transfusions. Since there is a scarcity of available blood, it is very hard to provide these people with the vital supply they need. You can save one of these lives by donating blood.Blood donations are taken by skilled and specially trained technicians. Donors must be at least age17, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good health. Just bring your identification, and provide some basic information. Be sure to eat regular, and drink plenty of fluids before donating. It is preferred that you do not take products containing aspirin for 72 hours before your appointment. Every three seconds, someone needs blood. Register today and help save a life. For more information call Barbara Meyer at 516-663-3514. Walk-ins are welcome.

A celebration of babies!

Mercy Medical Center recently held a celebration for the opening of their newly-expanded 15-bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Newborn Nursery.A dedication ceremony was held in which the medical staff, physicians, board members, administrators and the families of NICU babies participated in the formal blessing of the unit. There was a special presentation to Sister Anne Lynch, CIJ, who helped to launch the first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Mercy in 1959. Because of her efforts, Marcy was the first private hospital on Long Island with a specialized unit for neonatal intensive care. The designation of Level III was awarded to the perinatal services and the NICUof Mercy by New York state in recognition of the hospital's ability to provide competent and complex care to mothers with high risk pregnancies and to premature and sick newborn babies.
