Under terms of the agreement, the teachers will receive a pecentage increase each year for three years, as follows: 3.4 percent in the first, 3.2 percent in the second and 3.3 percent in the third year. Also in the contract, teachers are required to increase contributions to health insurance premiums. In the first and second years, contributions to premiums will increase from 10 percent to 14 percent for single coverage, and from 11 percent to 15 percent for family coverage. In the third year, the premium contribution will rise to 15 percent for single and 16 percent for family converage.
In past months, the teachers came out in force, calling for continued negotiations and ratification of a new contract, since they had worked without one since June, although they continued to receive benefits afforded under their expired one.
As negotiations stalled earlier this year, Gloria Panella, president of the Bellmore Faculty Organization, said at the time, "We are eager to settle, and will work long and hard into the night to do so. And we appreciate all the support we've gotten from the PTA, the parents."
