Bellmore filmmaker Leslye Abbey last Friday received the "Best Documentary" award at the Long Island International Film Expo Awards Ceremony for her new film, "Bob's Rolling Reefer." The ceremony, held at the Woolworth Estate in Glen Cove, honored winners of the Long Island International Film Expo in Malverne from July 14 through 20.
"My films are about my life and what comes to me," said Ms. Abbey. Nine years ago, she met a friendly truck driver named Bob while traveling in California. In 1998, she went on the road with Bob, filming their adventure.
During a six-day journey, Bob transports a load of pork to Seattle and potatoes to an Iowa warehouse. Throughout the documentary, Bob spins stories about life on the road, meets interesting people and drives through some of the most magnificent scenery in the country. The film also features original music from Long Island artists like country musician Mary Lamont and bluegrass musician Buddy Mirriam.
Since filming, post-production on the documentary has consumed much of Ms. Abbey's time for the past two years. In addition to producing films, the Bellmorite is a psychotherapist and cultural social worker.
Ms. Abbey earned the Humanitarian Film Award at last year's ceremony for her documentary, "Dharamsala," about Tibetan people in exile. A trip to Nepal and India provided the inspiration for that film.
Ms. Abbey attributes the success of "Bob's Rolling Reefer" to the many people who helped her with the project. "I'm so lucky to find people that are supportive. There is an incredible amount of talent behind [the film]," she said.
Ms. Abbey worked closely with the film's director, David Patrick. "Sometimes you meet people, and it's just synergy," said Mr. Patrick, referring to his relationship with Abbey.
Currently, Ms. Abbey is working on several different projects with David Patrick. In 1999, she traveled to Senegal, which will be the subject of at least three upcoming documentaries. She is working on a short documentary about the Iowa State Fair. Ms. Abbey is also now shooting show dogs and is planning a trip to Louisiana to study life in the bayou.
