Since June 2006, board members had been looking into the possibility of revamping the program, believed to be the only self-contained academically advanced program in Nassau County. After thanking everyone for their input, board President Marion Blane said, "The board feels we have a program that should be maintained at the present time." Components of the program would be reviewed in the future, she added.
A committee of parents and teachers was formed in October, charged with evaluating the current program and possible alternatives and making recommendations to the board about its future content and structure. The program currently consists of self-contained classes of fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students who are selected based on scoring high on IQ and other academic tests.
At the October board meeting, trustees asked parents and community members to voice their opinions about the program.
