Bellmore honors students

Among those honored were students who participated in a musical recorder concert, Winthrop Avenue School third-grade spelling bee winner Chloe Gura and runner-up Jessica Rosenfeld, and Triple C (Commitment, Character, Courage) Award winners Nicole Aliberti and Alexandra Schwartz, as well as Reinhard Early Childhood Center class representatives for community service.
Awards were also given to Math Olympiad competitors Ian Breslow, Jeme Casco, Leiana Maiberg, Adam Schutzman and Stephanie Vogel of Shore Road School. The team came in fifth out of 29 that competed from districts in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and Breslow placed second and Schutzman first individually in a field of 145 students at the recent competition at SUNY Old Westbury.
Bellmore PTA unit and individual school co-presidents were also honored for their work of behalf of the children. Honorees were unit co-presidents Shari Gurvitz and Gayle Apfel, Shore Road co-presidents Dawn Morris and Sharon Berkowitz, Winthrop Avenue co-presidents Penny Peyser and Helaine Rothberg, Reinhard co-presidents Patrice Brocco and Nanci Fishman, and immediate past unit President/adviser Michele Rothery.
New superintendent set for July
In other matters, new Superintendent Dr. Joseph Famularo was welcomed on board, as he is scheduled as of July 1 to take the reins from Sheldon Dumain, who tendered his resignation and announced his retirement in January. "I'm very proud to be part of this district," said Famularo, who is moving up from his current position as assistant superintendent for instructional services. Adding that he is looking forward to working with the Board of Education, fellow administrators, teaching staff and the community, he said, "We will do great things."
Famularo introduced his replacement for the instructional services post. "After an extensive search, we welcome Dr. Deborah DeLuca," he said. DeLuca is the former principal of William Floyd Elementary School, before which she was assistant principal. She has been an educator for 19 years.
In other business
In other developments, the board announced that the district received a $36,500 legislative Bullet Aid grant from New York state Sen. Charles Fuschillo Jr., a Republican from Merrick, to purchase of a community communications board, to be set up on Bedford Avenue in Bellmore Village. Digital messages about school developments, particularly closings or emergencies, will be posted on it to alert residents.
The next board meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 2, at 8 p.m. at Winthrop Avenue School.
