Bellmore Lions' annual holiday party Dec. 5

The Bellmore Lions Club will hold its annual children's holiday party on Saturday, Dec. 5 at the Brookside School (1260 Meadowbrook Road, North Merrick) beginning at 9 a.m., but things will look a little different this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

With a focus on keeping children and parents safe, the event, which in previous years was known as "The Polar Express Holiday Party," this year has made a "stop" at "Santa's Winter Workshop Walk-Through."

Families will be guided through an outdoor area where volunteers will help them gather pre-packaged grab-and-go gifts of toys, warm coats, books and other surprises. This event is free but invite-only. The Lions worked with the Nassau County Department of Social Services, local schools, charities and houses of worships to invite local families who are in need this holiday season.

"The Polar Express" has helped as many as 700 families in the past, and is a highlight of the year for the Bellmore Lions Club, which has been the backbone of the event for the past several years under the guidance of chairperson Nina Lanci.

"Although this event may look a bit different this year due to the health and safety regulations in regards to the pandemic, the joy and excitement remains the same for both the children and the volunteers who help," Lanci said. "There is nothing as touching as seeing a child's eyes light up and watch them smile at the sight of the beautiful toys and gifts they receive at this event. For many families that are struggling, especially this year, this event really brings the meaning of the holiday straight to the heart."
