Firefighters and local officials were joined by Rand's family at Eastern Avenue and Merrick Road as the new Adam D. Rand Avenue street sign was unveiled.
Rand, 30, was born in Bethpage and grew up in Bellmore, where he became a volunteer firefighter. In 1995, he joined the New York City Fire Department and was assigned to Squadron 288 in Queens, where he trained to deal with hazardous materials.
Rand and 18 of his fellow firefighters were among the first responders who died trying to save the lives of New Yorkers trapped at the World Trade Center buildings.
