On April 30, a touching ceremony held at the high school ensured that Spelman's spirit will live on forever. "It seemed the planting of a tree would be a good idea," said Spelman's good friend, East Rockaway Teacher Association President Chuck McAnulla. "He was a science teacher and had a love for the environment."
The memorial was made possible by the efforts of McAnulla, ERTA executive vice president and district teacher Joan Kelly, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Arnold Dodge, high school Principal William Fortgang, the Board of Education and custodial staff. The funds for the tree were donated by ERTA.
The ceremony was highlighted by some of Spelman's students, who stood in front of the gathering and talked unashamedly about their admiration for their late teacher. "For the first time in my life I thought I could understand science," East Rockaway junior Jessica Vuotto said. "To me he was a wonderful person. And I wish I could pass him one last time in the halls and thank him."
Taking comfort in the heartfelt remembrances were Spelman's wife, Gen; his mother, Mary; his sister, Anne; and his children, Mike and Alexandra.
"Our comfort in this situation is that we know that Jim Spelman is with us in the things that he taught us and in his love of life and laughter," McAnulla said. "This tree which we plant on Arbor Day -- the traditional holiday honoring nature -- will be a lasting symbol of his life and values. We hope that each day, when you pass it, you will think of Jim Spelman ... and smile."
In the near future, a memorial plaque will be affixed to the base of the tree, and two more plaques will be displayed in the hallways of the Centre Avenue and Rhame Avenue elementary schools, in remembrance of a teacher who not only taught science, but made a difference in the lives of those who knew him.
