Board creates John Davis Award

Posted
The award, which was announced at last Tuesday's board meeting, honors the former Board of Education trustee who died this past summer of a brain tumor. Davis, the father of four, was widely praised as a child advocate. The award will go to a student who has shown good character and citizenship.
Curriculum clarified
Four Birch Elementary School teachers helped clarify the district's reading and writing study program for different grade levels at a recent Merrick Board of Education meeting.
Ann Peluso, the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, explained the process that the district followed in developing the new study units.
Peluso said that on the last day of school last June, all teachers were given copies of the state's revised English Language Arts core curriculum at a district-wide meeting. Each grade-level team then discussed the proposed order of reading and writing study units for 2005-2006, and how the district would improve the ELA curriculum.
Last week, the Birch teachers shared sample study units, and what they are doing in their classrooms with these units. They also presented examples of their students' work.
Administrator to retire
Dr. William Clark, the assistant superintendent for administration and pupil personnel, will retire on June 30. Clark came to the district in 1990.
