The Long Beach Board of Education announced on Tuesday that David Weiss, an educator and administrator with more than 30 years of experience in public schools, will become the district’s superintendent on July 1. The board began an extensive four-month search for a replacement for Superintendent Dr. Robert Greenberg when Greenberg announced in December that he was retiring.
School officials lauded Greenberg’s seven-year stewardship of the district, saying that he had kept it financially sound. Board members said that they searched for a replacement who would be a solid educational leader.
“He has a tremendous understanding of curriculum and instruction,” board President Dr. Dennis Ryan said of Weiss. “Many deem him a wonderful leader. I’m sure you will each come to know him in a more personal way, and professional way, as the days unfold and as the years unfold.”
Since 2004, Weiss, a resident of Long Beach, has been the assistant superintendent for secondary education and the chief information officer of Commack Public Schools. Previously he was an assistant principal at Commack High School, and he spent 20 years in the Rockville Centre School District, teaching social studies, coaching and coordinating the International Baccalaureate Program.
Introduced at the meeting, Weiss said he was “thrilled and honored” to have been selected as the next superintendent. He praised the district, mentioning the I.B. program at the high school and the literacy program in the elementary schools, but also said he was aware of “a number of controversial topics” raised recently, though he did not elaborate.
“What I can promise you, as I promised the board, is that I will bring a fresh set of eyes to these discussions,” Weiss said. “The goal that I share with the board, and with all of you, is that we want to look with pride at our schools and at opportunities we create for our children to excel.”
Parents who attended the meeting said they were pleased with the appointment. Linda Morgenstern, co-president of the Long Beach High School PTSA and a member of the district’s search committee, said that it was a positive move for the district.
