The six-member school board has two options to fill the seat unexpectedly vacated by former Trustee Diana DeVito in June, who had two years remaining on her term. One option for the board is to appoint a new member, a measure that would require a majority of four affirmative votes. The appointee would be entitled to serve through the end of next June. In May, that appointee would have to win an election to complete the second year of the vacated term that expires in June 2011.
The alternative to a board appointment is to schedule a special election, which could cost the district thousands of dollars.
President Brian O'Flaherty said on Tuesday that the school board was considering six candidates for the seat.
At the June 25 work session, the school board was visited by the district's independent auditors Pappas and Company, and was given an annual presentation by internal auditor Lori Carrick. It approved several motions, including personnel-related items, upcoming capital projects and minutes from all meetings dating back to late March.
