Breitman, who has been Lawrence Association president for the past two years, made the announcement at the Wednesday March 15 meeting at Lawrence Village Country Club when the civic group's nominating committee was to make their recommendations for a slate of officers to be voted on.
"I truly believe that the presidency should be rotated to keep the Lawrence Association vibrant," said Breitman at the meeting.
Longtime Lawrence resident Jacquelyn Handel has been recommended by the nominating committee to succeed Breitman as president. Handel has been recording secretary for the Lawrence Association in recent years, attending every village board meeting while taking scrupulous notes so she could report the happenings to the civic group each month.
The Nominating committee also voted for current vice president Carolyn Karol to remain in her position for the next year. After the Board of Governors votes on the Nominating Committee's slate at the April 19 meeting, the general membership will vote on whether to approve it at the May meeting.
Incumbents endorsed for re-election
The Lawrence Association nominating committee voted to endorse all incumbents up for re-election for this June in the village of Lawrence and at the March 15 Lawrence Association meeting, the civic group's membership unanimously approved the recommendations.
The nominating committee voted to throw support behind mayor Dr. Jack Levenbrown and trustees Martin Oliner and Edward Klar, who's two-year terms are all up in June.
It is the second year in a row that the Lawrence Association's nominating process has gone smoothly after the 2004 endorsement discussions turned into chaos with a rejection of the nominations committee's recommendation.
The Lawrence village elections are scheduled for Tuesday, June 20. The deadline for interested trustee candidates to file petitions to run is Tuesday May 16.
