Collage art

"Collage Painting With Paper," a series of artworks by Baldwin resident Judy Feldman, will be on display at the Oceanside Library throughout March and April.

By skillfully integrating a wide range of printed material from magazine pages, Ms. Feldman has created a kaleidoscope of images, color, and subject matter that takes the original compositions and juxtaposes them to create a whole new world of dimension. Her work was previously exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, as part of student show, the Lever House, the Bryant Library in Roslyn, and has won awards at juried competitions through Nassau County.

A former art teacher, Ms. Feldman has studied at the Arts Students League and with C. W. Post Professor Paul Margin.

Burning Hametz

On the eve of Passover, it's customary to take any final remnants of leavened food, which are forbidden on the holiday, such as bread, cake and crackers, and to throw them into a fire to symbolically show that Jewish homes are free from this prohibited items. Food containing leaven is referred to as hametz. By only eating unleavened foods, such as matzos, Jews are reminded that the Israelites did not wait for their bread to rise when they left Egypt in the story of the Exodus.

Oceanside Jewish Center has invited the surrounding community to join in a public burning of Hametz in the parking lot of the synagogue at 9:30 a.m. April 22, with Oceanside Fire Department trucks standing by. Last year in Brooklyn, several participants suffered injuries at similar public burnings. Oceanside Fire fighters will make sure everyone remains safe at this burning ceremony.

Rabbi Mark Greenspan, the spiritual leader of the Oceanside Jewish Center, is also the chaplain of the Oceanside Fire Department as well as a certified firefighter himself.

Community participants will be bringing along any remaining bread, cake, and cookies and crackers they need to burn.

For more information, call Susan Shore at 763-1659.

'May The Fan Film Be With You' An Evening of Star Wars Appreciation Films

Clive Young treats science fiction fans and budding filmmakers to an evening of "fan films" in this unique visual program at the Oceanside Library May 5 at 7:30 p.m.

Spawned by the huge artistic and commercial success of the Star Wars saga, George Lucas' sci-fi masterpiece inspired and transformed many a movie fan into one-man film production companies. Found only on the Internet, these rare, high-quality movie shorts often take a comic view of George Lucas' creation or expand on the films with new story lines.

May the Fan Film Be With You will present 8-10 of the best fan films available. All material screened will be appropriate for the whole family, but discussion will be aimed primarily at young adults and the young at heart.
