Book Discussion: Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout

Thirteen intersecting short stories portray the fictional life of craggy retired teacher Olive Kitteridge and her small-town world in coastal Maine. The book discussion will be led by Eleanor Hochman at 2 p.m. on May 11.

The Oceanside Garden Club’s “Chrysanthemums”

Rich Heeseler, Treasurer of the National Chrysantemum Society’s Long Island chapter, provides expert advice on growing and caring for thse colorful, hardy flowers at 7 p.m. on May 11.

Art Lecture: “American Woman —Fashioning a National Identity

Art lecturer Emilia Rabito Baer explores the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s costume exhibition, “American Woman — Fashioning a National Identity” at 2 p.m. on May 13.

“Painting” with Polymer Clay at the Oceanside Library

A startling kaleidoscope of color, shapes, whimsical designs, and rich details are vivid components of Joan Israel’s art exhibit “Painting with Polymer Clay.” The exhibit will open on May 1 and remain on display at the library through June 30.  

“Coming up Roses” with the Oceanside Garden Club, Tuesday, June 8. Cathy Guzzardo, Master Gardener and Vice President of the Long Island Rose Society, gives “rosarians” advice on cultivating these romantic flowers. New members welcome! Refreshments will be served. 7p.m.

“Film Art” lecture: Herb and Dorothy -- the Vogels and Their Collection. Wednesday, June 9. Watch this inspiring documentary and join art lecturer Mary Vahey as she discusses the contemporary art collection amassed by an assuming postal worker and his librarian wife. Pathways -- Illuminating Landscapes Through Photography and Poetry, Thursday, June 10. Landscape photographer Dency Kane teams up with poet and teacher Madelyn Pressman Edelson to show breathtaking images of flowers along with nature-inspired poetry. 2 p.m.

Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Chamber Music, Tuesday, June 15. Beethoven historian Dr. Stuart Bailin explores the composer’s early chamber music which paved the way for his symphonic works. 2 p.m.

Current Issues, Wednesday, June 16. Political commentator Barbara Krupit explores today’s headline news stories. 1:30-3 p.m.

Bereavement Support Group

COPE, a grief and healing organization dedicated to supporting parents and families living with the loss of a child, holds free monthly support group meetings on the first Wednesday of every month for parents on the South Shore at the Oceanside Jewish Center. The next meeting will be held from 7:30-9:30 p.m. on May 5. If you are interested in attending or for more information, please call Karen Flyer at 484-4993.

Spring Auction

The Oceanside Lutheran Church, 55 Fairview Avenue, will sponsor a spring auction beginning at 6 p.m. on May 7. Drawing of tickets will begin at 7 p.m. Over 100 items will be auctioned. Each prize has its own “hat,” allowing you to choose which prizes you would like to focus on. There will also be special raffle items. Admission is $5. Tickets include two envelopes with 5 tickets in each. Coffee and cake will be served. Additional food will be available for purchase. For more information, call 766-0136.

Multi-Family Garage Sale

The Island Park United Methodist Church, 364 Long Beach Road, will host a multi-family garage sale from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on May 29. The Little Seashell School will also be running a used toy and book table. Proceeds from the toy sale will be going towards a new piece of playground equipment. Any donations will be accepted. Come on down and see what the vendors have for sale! Vender spots are available for $20 each. You must supply your own tables. If you are interested in renting a vendor spot or have items to donate, call Chris Wilson at 431-1983.

Oceanside Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Country Fair on Sat. May 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine, at Schoolhouse Green (located at Foxhurst Road, east of Long Beach Road). The event will feature arts and crafts, as well as antiques and collectibles, merchandise, and a Town of Hempstead passport mobile. Plus food, cotton candy and an inflatable slide.

Spaghetti dinner: Friday May 21, 6:30pm. Spaghetti Dinner at Oceanside Lutheran Church -- Join us for some home cooking. Cost: $10 per person, $5 for ages 12 and under. OLC 55 Fairview Ave, Oside, next to the Library. This Benefit Spaghetti Dinner is being held to raise money for the Youth Summer Service/Mission Trip to Pennsylvania. OLC youth will partner with local organizations to serve struggling families and community members by working with people who are homeless, children and the elderly in Harrisburg, PA.

San Gennaro Feast pre-sale 41st annual pre-San Gennaro Feast White Elephant Tag Sales. We received so many wonderful items for our San Gennaro Feast, we just couldn’t wait until September to sell them. The sales will be held at the Sacred Heart Parish Center, 301 Long Beach Road, in Island Park — two blocks north of the Long Beach Bridge. JCC Day Trippers outing to Longwood Gardens Spend an amazing day strolling Pennsylvania’s Longwood Gardens. Trip includes: breakfast on the bus, private guided Longwood Story hour plus long tour in the morning, special “making scents” indoor exhibit where we will create our own fragrances, view world famous fountains all over these 20 indoor and 20 outdoor gardens, lunch food voucher, Heritage DuPont house.
