John D. Cameron, Jr., P.E., the founder and managing partner of Cameron Engineering & Associates, LLP has been re-appointed by Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano to serve another three year term on the Long Island Regional Planning Council. His appointment was confirmed by a 19-0 vote of the Nassau County Legislature. Cameron serves as the council’s chairman, having been unanimously re-elected to his post by the 12-member council earlier this year.
The Long Island Regional Planning Council represents both Nassau and Suffolk counties in long-range planning for the island. It also serves as a major voice for Long Island and as an advocate on issues affecting local governmental policy, regionally significant projects, grants and funding.
One of its major initiatives, the development of the island’s long-term sustainability plan —“LI-2035”— is presently completing its first phase. This phase will outline sustainable strategies for the Island. It addresses such major overarching issues as the economy, tax and governance, infrastructure and equity. Key elements of the plan include economic development, property taxes, job creation, affordability, housing, education, health care, transportation, energy, water, wastewater, waste management, the natural environment and social equity. This major effort led by the council is being performed with the assistance and input of a leadership advisory cabinet as well as stakeholder groups comprised of business, institutional, government and civic leaders, in conjunction with a team of national, regional and local planning consultants. The Sustainable Strategies Plan Document is expected to be released by the summer.
In recognition of his leadership role on the council and as other organizations, Cameron has been named by the Long Island Press to its 2010 Power List, designating Long Island’s “Top 50 Most Influential and Powerful Long Islanders.” He has also recently been recognized with the David Award for business and community leadership by Networking Magazine, the Norman J. Levy Humanitarian Award by the Nassau County Republican Committee presented at its Inaugural Ball, and he was selected as Engineer of the Year by the Nassau Chapter of the New York Society of Professional Engineers. Cameron received his bachelor’s degree from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point and his master’s degree from Long Island University.
Cameron Engineering just celebrated its 25th anniversary in business as one of Long Island’s premier consulting engineering and planning firms. The Woodbury-based firm has received numerous national, state and local awards.
Cameron lives in Rockville Centre with his wife, Loretta. His newlywed son Andrew and his wife Colleen, reside in Lynbrook and his daughter, Christine, lives in Manhattan.
