Cancer victim's van is stolen

Posted
Erin Getlzer, who has had two surgeries and is still undergoing chemotherapy treatments for brain cancer, was inside the store at the time with her mother, Joan Getzler, and her two older brothers, shopping with donated gift cards. Erin's wheelchair, eyeglasses and medication were inside the 1994 Dodge Caravan, which was parked in a handicapped spot when it was stolen, reports said.
The child needs the van to avoid exposure to germs owing to her weakened immune system, as well as to accommodate her wheelchair. The theft occurred the day before Erin's first day back to first grade at Martin Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore District. Joan Getzler filed a police report. The van had not been found as of press time. The police are reportedly checking store security camera footage for possible leads.
Herald readers may recall an announcement in these pages about a benefit concert fund-raiser to cover medical costs for Erin, held at Mulcahy's Pub in April. Now Erin needs the community's help again. The Winthrop University Cancer Center in Mineola is collecting donations to replace the lost items. To donate, call (516) 663-9400, or mail a check payable to the "Erin Getzler Foundation," c/o Winthrop University Hospital, Department Of External Affairs, 286 Old Country Road, Mineola N.Y. 11501.
