Carey accepts the Challenge

On that day, two young boys, in commemoration of Adolf Hitler's birthday, tragically took the lives of 12 students, one teacher and left 24 other individuals wounded, before the two boys committed suicide. Described as a normal teenager, Rachel Scott emphasized the little things in life that truly mattered. She demonstrated great acts and touched the lives of the people she encountered on an everyday basis.
Rachel's father, siblings and friends created an organization called Rachel's Challenge to commemorate her life.
Rachel had a theory, "That if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same."
Last school year, Carey hosted the Rachel's Challenge assembly program. This year, Rachel's Legacy came to H. Frank Carey High School. In Rachel's Legacy, students are encouraged to create their own legacy and to recognize their full potential.
Derek Kilgore, a family friend, spoke to the student body about creating a lasting legacy similar.
Additionally, 40 students who will serve as peer mediators attended a group workshop on incorporating the program into peer mediation.
All students committed to taking the challenge can be part of an organization called F.O.R. (Friends Of Rachel) under the advisorship of Ms. Annunziata and Dr. Schnepf. This program was created to inform high school students about the importance of kindness and forgiveness. At the end of each assembly, students who accepted Rachel's Challenge signed their names on banners that will be hung in the cafeteria proclaiming their willingness to accept the challenge.
