Quarterbacks combine for eight passing scores

Kennedy was set to march into halftime last Saturday against visiting Carey trailing the Conference II matchup by just four points.

The Seahawks, however, had different plans. A 50-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Kyle Zahradka to receiver Juliano Bove with six seconds remaining in the half put them ahead by 11.

The play ignited the Carey offense, which was able to produce three more touchdowns in the second half to come away victorious on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at John F. Kennedy High School, 45-27.

The late first-half score was one of many big plays for Carey, which converted three touchdowns of 50 yard or more.

“We made big plays and that’s why we’re in this offense,” Carey coach Mike Stanley said. “We’re able to get quick hitters like that. Despite not playing very great on defense, our kids kept pushing offensively and we were able to put up a bunch of points.”

Carey (4-0) wasted no time getting on the board, as junior running back Rob Zorn ran 37 yards for a touchdown to give the Seahawks an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Seahawks added another in the second quarter after Zahradka connected with Bove for the pair’s first touchdown of the day to make it 12-0.

The Cougars (1-3) found their offense midway through the quarter, and a 15-yard rush by senior running back Joey Karo gave Kennedy a first-and-goal from the Cougar 9-yard line. Two plays later, senior quarterback Adrian Rose found junior Patrick Kutil in the end zone for the team’s first touchdown of the day.

Carey would respond, as a 5-yard quarterback sneak into the end zone by Zahradka made the score 18-7.

It was Kennedy’s turn to march down the field after that, and Rose threw a touchdown pass to Karo with 25 seconds remaining in the half to make it 18-14.

Before they could even finish celebrating, Zahradka launched the 50-yarder to Bove just before the half.

“They have really athletic kids who made some real athletic plays,” said Kennedy coach Nick Martone.

In the second half, Zahradka found Jesse Milonas, who made a juggling catch in the back of the end zone to give Carey a 32-14 lead.
