About 15 minutes after the carjacking, the suspect, Reginald Walker, 46, of Rockaway Beach Boulevard in Rockaway Beach, was in handcuffs, nabbed by police as he sat behind the wheel of the carjacked 1994 Mercedes-Benz, police said.
He was arrested within a half-hour. I would say that's a pretty good grab, said Det. Lt. Gregory Detwiller, commander of the Fourth Squad.
According to detectives, the 28-year-old victim had just pulled into the Marshall's Department Store parking lot, at 345 Rockaway Turnpike in North Lawrence, at about 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4.
A door opens and in comes a guy, who puts a gun to her head and pushes the victim to the passenger's side, said Fourth Precinct Capt. James O'Leary.
He said the suspect took over the wheel of the car and drove away with the woman in the passenger seat. Along the way, he demanded her money and jewelry and her identification, as he continued to point the gun at her, police said.
She apparently pleaded with the suspect, repeatedly begging, Let me out! Let me out!
