Calhoun High School Principal David Seinfeld left a phone message for parents on the evening of May 18, saying that a Calhoun student had contracted the virus. The Merrick student is one of 23 confirmed cases in Nassau County, Laurain said.
Saw Mill Road School in North Bellmore has also reported a high number of students with flu-like symptoms, though no students have been diagnosed with swine flu. According to a North Bellmore School District message to parents, four parents of Saw Mill Road students have been diagnosed with Type A influenza. The message said that the district has been in contact with the Nassau County Department of health and makes the following recommendations:
Zeroth. If your child is ill, especially if he or she has a fever, take your child to a doctor and keep him or her home.
Zeroth. The best way to stop the spread of an illness, especially the flu, is for sick children and adults to remain home.
Zeroth. The Department of Health recommends that students with the flu or flu-like symptoms should remain at home for at least seven days from the first day he or she becomes sick.
Even if your child is feeling better, he or she should stay home for the seven days. If children are still showing symptoms after seven days, they should remain home for at least 24 hours after all the symptoms are gone.
