In remarks at the June 22 Commencement Exercises for the Class of 2007, Board of Education trustee Mark Masin also reminded the graduating students to take responsibility for respecting themselves and the people around them. Trust your decision making process, your instincts and be honest with yourself and others, he told the class.
Other speakers at the ceremony, held in the Hofstra University Arena on a beautiful early summer afternoon, included Alex Lipton, president of the Class of 2007 and Lauren Hartstein, president of the Student Government Association. Samantha Hicks sang the National Anthem. Ryan O'Neil, class salutatorian and Amanda Feldman, the valedictorian, also addressed the graduates. Andrew Krouss, president of the SSHS Alumni Association presented Jamiela McDonnough with the Centennial Award for School and Community. Jasmeet Mahandru received the Dr. Richard S. Byers School and Community Service Award from SSHS principal Dr. Carol Burris, and Dr. Johnson presented the Laurel Awards for Girls and Boys to Taylor Burke and Max Kutner, respectively.
Dr. Burris presented a moving tribute to the high school's outgoing Assistant Principal Francisco Argiz, tracing his odyssey of arriving in this country as a Cuban refugee and triumphing over numerous challenges to achieve personal and professional success. Mr. Argiz and outgoing Board of Education trustee Meg Koch each received honorary diplomas. The high school's wind ensemble and members of the National Honor Society also participated in the ceremony.
