Celebrating Apollo’s mission to the moon

Events and activities honor Long Island’s legacy in creating one of the nation’s greatest technological achievements: the Lunar Module.
Bring the family to visit one the region’s “crown jewels,” the Lunar Module displayed on the Lunar Surface in the museum’s Space Gallery. See an original lunar module only a few miles from the plant where they were built, at what was Grumman’s plant in nearby Bethpage. These lunar modules were designed to keep two men alive on the moon, get them there and back, and be small enough to fit inside the Saturn V rocket.
Saturday, in particular, will be a busy day at the museum, as those who participated in the creation and construction of the Lunar Module are honored at Lunar Module Worker Reunion Day.
“One of the most significant achievements in our nation’s history took place on July 20, 1969 when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the moon in the Lunar Module built here on Long Island,” said Cradle of Aviation Executive Director Andrew Parton. “We are thrilled to have Bethpage Federal Credit Union help us to acknowledge those who made this incredible journey possible.”
Other special Apollo-related activities include IMAX screenings of “Magnificent Desolation, “Walking on the Moon” and “Fly me to the Moon” in the museum’s IMAX Theater.
