The Walk Committee is offering incentives to ensure a great turnout. The first 100 Walk for Wellness registrants will get Community Wellness Council T-shirts, and the first 200 will get Breathe Freely cotton tote bags, donated by the Tobacco Action Coalition of Long Island.
To encourage the formation of teams of walkers, Face First, a medically integrated skin and laser center at South Nassau's Women's Health Center, 2740 Merrick Road in Bellmore, has generously offered free facials to the members of the team that has the greatest number of walkers, excluding PTA walking club walkers, to complete the Walk for Wellness.
The facial includes a cleansing, exfoliation and mask performed by a licensed esthetician. Dr. Sheila D'Nodal, the center's medical director, said, "The aim of South Nassau's Women's Health Center is no longer merely to treat disease once it is established, but it is to prevent illness and safeguard and promote well being. The focus on prevention is one that we share with the Community Wellness Council and why we are supporting their Walk for Wellness."
A traveling trophy will be awarded to the school with the greatest number of PTA Walking Club participants at the Walk for Wellness. The trophy is currently held by the Chatterton School in Merrick. The first 200 PTA Walking Club kids will get a special PTA Walking Club T-shirt and a league week discount from Modell's Sporting Goods that will be just in time for Father's Day, and a lanyard whistle bracelet from South Nassau Communities Hospital.
We also plan to celebrate a smoke-free New York. The community is invited to come to the Levy Park to sign their names on a "I Love Smoke-free NY" sign-in board. The Tobacco Action Coalition of Long Island, an organization which the Community Wellness Council is a member of, will provide "I Love Smoke free NY" pins to the first 200 walk participants.
