Dozens of local residents and civic leaders celebrated the Baldwin Community Garden’s fifth birthday on June 21.
Hosted by the Baldwin Civic Association, the 70s-themed party rung in another year of dancing, socializing and relaxing in the communal space.
Noticing a lack of park space in North Baldwin, Rita Cavanagh of the civic’s beautification committee found a small, unused plot of land behind the Baldwin Historical Museum about six years ago. The civic association leased the property and converted it into a space where Baldwinites could go to share art and music.
Nassau County Executive Laura Curran — who worked with the civic to secure the space during her time as county legislator — briefly stopped by the festivities, as did State Assemblywoman Judy Griffin.
While the garden used to be home to vegetables and herbs, it’s now more of a space for musical performances, local art pieces, murals and yoga, tai chi and other exercise events.
