Mohammed Jafree Khan, a senior at Central High School, received a prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship for 2016, one of 1,000 students in the country chosen from a pool of more than 53,000 applicants.

The scholarship is good for any accredited college or university in the U.S. and is renewable, with amounts determined each year. Scholars are eligible for additional funding for graduate studies in specified fields. The program also offers resources, services and events to support its scholars in their college and professional endeavors.

Khan was nominated for the program by teacher Lissette Elezi and recommended by counselor Amy LaPersonerie. He is a member of the Student Council and the National Honor Society, serves as a peer mentor, is taking three advanced placement classes and plays varsity tennis.

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program was established in 1999 and was initially funded by a $1 billion grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
