Central, North and South graduations and awards Friday, June 22, 5:30 p.m.

Posted
Officially the first class of the new millennium, the Class of 2001 will stride across the stage on Friday, June 22, at 5:30 p.m. in simultaneous outdoor graduation ceremonies at Central, North and South High Schools. In case of rain, graduation will take place on Saturday, June 23, same time, same place.
Salutatorians Kevin Murphy of Central High School, Rica Mae Enriquez of North, and Matthew Nathanson of South High will give the salutatory or welcoming speech to assembled guests.
Giving the traditional valedictory or farewell address at the three schools will be valedictorians Keryn O'Leary at Central, Lori Ellis at North, and Michael Apap from South.
Also addressing their classmates at graduation ceremonies will be the seven members of Central High School's Senior Class Council: Phil Chan, Zoe Frangos, Patricia Holihan, John Leung, Keryn O'Leary, Mike Pellegrino, Nicole Ventimiglia-and Senior Class Presidents Cara Senicola of North High School and Mike Apap of South.
The Class of 2001 numbers approximately 588 students. All are congratulated and wished a bright and happy future in the new century.

Valedictorians and Salutatorians
Heading to six different universities in four states, with plans to enter six widely different career fields in the arts and sciences, are this year's multi-talented valedictorians and salutatorians.
All six took a rigorous academic schedule of 7-11 college-level Advanced Placement courses in high school, were inducted into multiple honor societies, and played an active role in the extracurricular life of the school.

Central High School
Attending Fordham University next fall with plans to major in communications is Central High School's valedictorian Keryn O'Leary, who hopes to enter the field of television production. She received an academic half-tuition Dean's Scholarship for all four years at Fordham. An AP Scholar with Honor, she plays alto saxophone in the jazz band, sings in the women's choir, was selected to the District Band and Chorus for grades 9-12, had singing roles in several Central and Memorial musicals, and was active in the junior auxiliary of the American Legion for over 10 years.
Central High School salutatorian Kevin Murphy plans a musical theater major at James Madison University in Virginia, with hopes of eventually becoming an actor and music teacher. Talented in music, he was named to the All-State mixed chorus this fall, had received All-County honors in grades 9-12, and was selected to the District Music Festival chorus for grades 9-12, and band (trumpet), grades 10-12. In addition to playing leading roles in the Central musicals "Brigadoon," "South Pacific" and "42nd Street," he also gained valuable experience as student musical director of Memorial Junior High's productions of "West Side Story" and "The Wizard of Oz." Kevin additionally serves Central High School as president of the Student Council.

North High School
Focused on becoming a doctor, possibly in the field of developmental pediatrics, North High School valedictorian Lori Ellis of Franklin Square was accepted to a full tuition, eight-year B.A./M.D. program at Brooklyn College that comes with a guaranteed spot at Downstate Medical School. An A.P. Scholar with Distinction, with strong interests in science and psychology, Lori took part in the district's three-year advanced science (Intel) research program. She's also president of North's Student Council, treasurer and an editor of the North Chariot yearbook, a cheerleader in grades 9-11, and involved in North community service projects such as "Kids on the Block," Student Peer Organization and walk-a-thons for charity.

Accepted into Johns Hopkins' Whiting School of Engineering for a five-year B.S./M.S. degree is North High School salutatorian Rica Mae Enriquez, who plans to major in environmental engineering and eventually become a professor and researcher. She'll be working as a lab assistant at Johns Hopkins this summer, after her Intel science research project on bioremediation whetted her appetite for research. Rica is president of National Honor Society, vice president of the 12th Grade Class Council, and a member of North's NYS Scholar/Athlete volleyball team. She plays viola in the orchestra and select ensemble, was chosen for the District Music Festival orchestra in grades 9-12 and All-County orchestra for grades 10-12, and is also active in "Kids on the Block," Students and Teachers Opposing Prejudice, and Interact Club community service projects.

South High School
Columbia University's School of Engineering is the destination of South High School valedictorian Michael Apap, who plans to combine his love of computers and business by majoring in engineering and management, with the eventual career goal of managing an engineering firm. Michael is Senior Class President at South. An AP Scholar with Honor, he has taken 11 AP courses. He's captain of South's NYS Scholar/Athlete cross country team and also captain of the boys varsity track team.
A talented writer, South High School salutatorian Matthew Nathanson will attend Tufts University next year, where he plans to major in English or psychology, with the hope of becoming a novelist. Matthew has already won several writing awards, such as the Irish poetry contest last year and this year, the National Council of Teachers of English writing award, and the New York State English Council scholarship. He's an AP Scholar with Distinction, has had leading roles in South musicals and dramas, sings in the Long Island Connection select vocal ensemble, and was selected to the District Music Chorus, grades 10-12, and the All-County Chorus, grades 11-12.
