On this day, Li, who took fifth place in the Siemens Westinghouse Competition, was describing his vision for a relief concert that he planned with Central science teacher Sal Finelli. "It will be kind of a variety show, but mostly musical," said Li.
The Central Relief Show, presented by the Future Medical Leaders, is scheduled for Feb. 16 in Central's Keller Auditorium, from 7 to 9 p.m. All proceeds will be channeled through the American Red Cross to aid survivors of Hurricane Katrina.
"We want to show the community what our school is like," said Li. "By getting together to raise money for a good cause, we're hoping to create the sense of community that Valley Stream is looking for."
Students and teachers will collaborate on a show that will include musical and dramatic performances. Performers include the bands Always There and Big Freaky Robot, the Central Men's and Women's Choirs, Li, and Randy Ruiz.
"We're hoping to display the talents of the school for a good cause," Finelli said.
The show will be recorded, and will be available on DVD for purchase after the show. Admission to the show is $5.
"Without being overly ambitious, we hope to raise about $4,000 to $5,000," said Finelli. "We'd like to help as much as we can."
