Curves aids tsunami victims
Curves fitness loss centers are opening their doors on Sunday, Jan. 30 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. to help raise money for Tsunami victims.
Although Curves is typically closed on Sundays, the Long Island franchises have joined forces for a fundraising event. A cover charge of $10 per person (non-Curve members and members are both welcome) at the door for a 30-minute workout with a personal instructor. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be donated to build an orphanage in Galle District, Sri Lanka, which will provide homes to over two hundred orphaned children.
"We all feel so helpless," said Baldwin Curves owner Lynn Gross. "This is an opportunity to do something concrete and to get the New Year off to a good start."
Indira Amarasingbe, a Patchogue resident and Curves member, pledged to donate 12 family-owned acres in Sri Lanka to build an orphanage for the youngest tsunami victims. Amarasingbe lost a family home and a cousin to the disaster. Other relatives are still missing.
"Curves members are the most generous people I've known," she said. "I am grateful for their compassion and enthusiasm."
It is estimated that it will cost over $3 million to build the orphanage. Curves hopes to raise $50,000. Direct donations are being accepted by the Sri Lanka Orphanage Fund, Ltd., 31 West Main Street, Suite 212, Patchogue, NY 11772. For more information, call Dula Amarasingbe at (631) 447-6533.
