The City of Long Beach hosted the LI Crisis Center’s Second Annual “Let’s Walk – Let’s Talk” walk on Sunday, September 26, with several hundred people registering to promote suicide awareness and prevention.
Entertainment, raffles and prizes were provided to walkers, and Nassau County Legislator Denise Ford was presented with the Linda Nadle Memorial Award for Community Service for all of the support she has given to the center. The award, presented by LICC’s Linda Leonard and Dorothy Jacobs, is named for Nadle, a former LICC employee.
The mission of Long Island Crisis Center is to provide free, high quality, accessible and confidential services to Long Islanders in crisis.
Among the honored guests were relatives of suicide victims, including Brian Coyle, who spoke about how his brother Christopher could have benefited from LICC’s outreach programs. Paula Pilkington read a poignant letter to teenage daughter Alexis “Lexi” who took her own life this earlier this year.
Ford was joined by Legislator Dave Dennenberg and Long Beach City Councilman and Waterfront Warriors Co-Chairman John McLaughlin, who spoke of his visits to Walter Reade Medical Center where he learned of the high suicide rate among young soldiers.
