"This is a program that teaches young people about providing a service, making a difference in the community while cleaning the business corridor of our town," Alfano said.
Numerous civic associations see quality of life issues as community priorities, Alfano said.
"Our neighborhoods want a community that is presentable, attracts jobs and is clean. A program like "Clean Sweep bridges the gap between business, government and community is a unique and positive way," Alfano said.
Pat Boyle, director of Gateway Youth Outreach, said that Clean Sweep makes a difference. "This program has helped clean the turnpike and taught our young people in Elmont about service and community pride. The partnership between our chamber, GYO and Tom Alfano has made this program a great success."
Anthony Rodriguez, an Elmont Memorial High School junior and a member of the Clean Sweep team, said, By doing this work we're making Elmont a more attractive place to do business and improving the quality of life for our neighborhoods."
Clean Sweep started almost four years ago and has expanded each year. This year, a similar program is taking place in West Hempstead through the West Hempstead Civic Association.
