Fourth grade students were joined by veterans, Superintendent Dr. Maria Palandra, Principal Marshall Zucker and Assemblyman Tom Alfano in dedicating a memorial marker in the rear of the school building. The marker is a special tribute reading "God Bless America" and flanked an American flag sign and a flagpole. "This is very important for young people to see," said Tom Bennet, Commander of the Elmont VFW. "When Children know about what makes this country free, they appreciate what makes this country special."
"Elmont, like many of our communities, rose to the challenge and was on the front lines," said Alfano. " They sent firefighters and volunteers and had scores of people looking to help. That's what makes a community strong."
Principal Marshall Zucker remarked about how we will all remember where we were when it happened, drawing a comparison to the Kennedy assassination.
Gotham Avenue student council member Stephanie Douglas welcomed everyone and spoke about the high cost of freedom, being paid right now by "the young men and women who are overseas making a difference for our country."
"I think it was a real healing time for many people," said Alfano. " I hope that we will continue to move forward as a community but always remember and cherish those who are no longer with us.
