This year, in the interest of accompanying you down (short-term) memory lane, the Herald has create a photographic journal of the year in review. We were there for the traditional celebrations that make Rockville Centre the exciting community it is. We watched as new village officials were elected, and as density issues were debated. We watched the community come together in relief efforts for hurricane and tsunami survivors. We saw senior citizens volunteering in nursing homes and with troubled youth.
Many community members earned accolades this year. Ed Oppenheimer was named the Chamber of Commerce's Man of the year. Charles Generio was promoted to lieutenant in the RVCPD. Two South Side High School seniors were named Intel semifinalists. Harriett Nalty Fargnoli was named Librarian of the Year. Rockville Centre resident Denis Dillon, Nassau County's district attorney, was heralded for more than 30 years of public service after losing his bid for re-election to Kathleen Rice.
Molloy College was visited by former Secretary of State Colin Powell and Dr. Myles Brand, National Collegiate Athletic Association President. Representatives of the Diocese of Rockville Centre traveled to World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany, and Rabbi Barry Dov Schwartz of Temple B'Nai Shalom visited with both the Pope and the king of Jordan.
The village said goodbye to old friends Viola Kreeb, the former social editor of the News and Owl, and to Maj. Gen. Joseph Healey. RVC welcomed the unveiling of a new and improved Tanglewood Preserve, and a new Panera Bread outlet on Merrick road.
Rockville Centre athletes excelled this year, with South Side High School teams winning championships in girls' soccer and boys' track and field, the Molloy College men's lacrosse team bringing home the high honors in the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the St. Agnes girls' CYO team winning the Long Island CYO Diocesan Championship.
That's just a sampling of the events of the past year. As you turn the pages of this week's Herald, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride through 2005.
