Knights of Pythias The Knights of Pythias Alliance-East Meadow Lodge 774 is seeking new members to join its ranks. Sons of Italy The East Meadow local lodge, Edward J. Speno Lodge No. 2568, are calling on Italians and Italian Americans to join the largest men and women organization in America, the Order of Sons of Italy in America. The best sellers club: The library is now conducting a membership drive to its Best Sellers Club. By joining, members will be automatically placed on the reserve list for the latest fiction by their favorite authors. Simply select the authors you enjoy from the list on the library's Best Sellers form. When the newest publication from a member's author list arrives, the member will be notified.
Downloadable books now available: The library is now offering digital audiobooks for MP3 players. Through the library's Web site, library patrons can download as many as 10 of the 1200 unabridged books offered by NetLibrary. Over 750 of these are recorded book titles. Senior Congress at St. Raphael Church, 600 Newbridge Road, East Meadow, on Oct. 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The first annual Senior Congress offers workshops and information stations on topics including: Medicare Part D, safety in the home, reverse mortgages, elder law, senior housing and scam prevention. A continental breakfast will be available at 9 a.m. and lunch will be served. It is not necessary to be a senior to attend. Advance registration is required. Stroke prevention screenings: Life Line Screening will offer preventative stroke screenings on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at St.Raphael's, 600 Newbridge Rd. 50 percent of all strokes have no symptoms and 80 percent of all strokes are preventable. Five tests will be offered to detect your risk for Stroke, Aneurysm, Peripheral Vascular Disease, Osteoporosis and Atrial Fibrillation (One of every six strokes is caused by this very common irregular heart beat). Book signing: Don't You Get It? Living with Auditory Learning Disabilities. An opportunity to attend a workshop and book signing with the authors, including Loraine Alderman, Psy.D., of East Meadow. The book defines auditory processing disorder in "user friendly terms" and allows readers to understand the differences between APD and Attention Deficit Disorder. Support groups
Alzheimer's support: The Bristal Assisted Living, 40 Merrick Ave., hosts an Alzheimer's disease support group for caregivers every second Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Call Pat Kiley at (516) 918-4009 to register.
Helping relatives of addicts Relatives and friends who are suffering as a result of a loved one's battle with addition can now receive support via a hotline run by the Long Island Crisis Center, at (516) 481-4000.
The Long Island Crisis Center is Long Island's longest running telephone crisis intervention center.
Substance help: Alcoholics Anonymous meetings held Thursdays and Sundays in the school cafeteria of St. Barnabas Church in Bellmore. All meetings start at 7:30 p.m.
Support for moms: The Sunrise Mothers' Center, a member-run, non-sectarian, non-profit organization in Bellmore, is dedicated to supporting the needs and experiences of mothers. The center provides discussion groups with child care on premises, active committee work, book groups, social activities for parents and children, and speakers on various topics.

Help for smokers: The Nassau County Department of Health, in collaboration with the New York State Smokers' Quitline, is sponsoring a program which offers four weeks of nicotine replacement therapy for smokers who want to quit. The therapy also known as "the patch" is available to medically-eligible county residents at no cost. To determine eligibility, residents should call the New York Smokers' Quitline at 1-866-697-8487, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and weekends from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information about the Health Department's Tobacco Cessation Program, call (516) 571-2022.
Crisis counseling: The Long Island Crisis Center offers 24-hour/seven-day-a-week crisis intervention counseling. Anyone who is depressed, needs help in controlling teenagers or wants to beat an addiction is encouraged to call (516) 679-1111. Calls are free and anonymous.
Overeaters Anonymous is held on Tuesdays from 7:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Salisbury Park on Salisbury Park Drive in East Meadow. Overeaters Anonymous offers mutual support and fellowship for those recovering from compulsive overeating. Everyone is welcome! For more information, call (516) 997-4534.
