Knights of Pythias. The Knights of Pythias Alliance-East Meadow Lodge 774 is seeking new members to join its ranks. This non-sectarian organization serves the community through a number of altruistic endeavors, including food baskets for the needy, donations to charitable organizations, anti-drug programs, and a host of other activities. Sons of Italy. The East Meadow local lodge, Edward J. Speno Lodge No. 2568, are calling on Italians and Italian Americans to join the largest men and women organization in America, the Order of Sons of Italy in America. This co-ed local lodge meets on the second Monday of every month at 7:30 p.m. at the Jewish school of culture center, 574 East Meadow Ave. in East Meadow. Exhibition. The Garvies Point Museum and Preserve is a valued resource in the study of Long Island's Native American archaeology, its rich natural history and the invaluable contributions of the Native Americans who settled this land. The Museum is now bringing one of their exhibits on the Native Americans of Long Island to the Browsing Room for the month of January.
The best sellers club. The library is now conducting a membership drive to its Best Sellers Club. By joining, members will be automatically placed on the reserve list for the latest fiction by their favorite authors. Simply select the authors you enjoy from the list on the libraryÕs Best Sellers form. When the newest publication from a memberÕs author list arrives, the member will be notified.
Book discussions. The library runs an evening book discussion group, which meets monthly at 7:30 p.m.
Downloadable books now available. The library is now offering digital audiobooks for MP3 players. Through the libraryÕs Web site, library patrons can download as many as 10 of the 1200 unabridged books offered by NetLibrary. Over 750 of these are recorded book titles. Religious events

Community Events

FD membership drive. The East Meadow Fire Department is accepting applications for membership. The department is currently looking to fill positions as firefighter and medical technician. Support groups
AlzheimerÕs support. The Bristal Assisted Living, 40 Merrick Ave., hosts an AlzheimerÕs disease support group for caregivers every second Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Call Pat Kiley at (516) 918-4009 to register.
Helping relatives of addicts. Relatives and friends who are suffering as a result of a loved oneÕs battle with addition can now receive support via a hotline run by the Long Island Crisis Center, at (516) 481-4000. The Long Island Crisis Center is Long IslandÕs longest running telephone crisis intervention center.
Substance help. Alcoholics Anonymous meetings held Thursdays and Sundays in the school cafeteria of St. Barnabas Church in Bellmore. All meetings start at 7:30 p.m.
Support for moms. The Sunrise MothersÕ Center, a member-run, non-sectarian, non-profit organization in Bellmore, is dedicated to supporting the needs and experiences of mothers. The center provides discussion groups with child care on premises, active committee work, book groups, social activities for parents and children, and speakers on various topics.

Help for smokers. The Nassau County Department of Health, in collaboration with the New York State SmokersÕ Quitline, is sponsoring a program which offers four weeks of nicotine replacement therapy for smokers who want to quit. The therapy also known as Òthe patchÓ is available to medically-eligible county residents at no cost. To determine eligibility, residents should call the New York SmokersÕ Quitline at 1-866-697-8487, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and weekends from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information about the Health DepartmentÕs Tobacco Cessation Program, call (516) 571-2022.
Crisis counseling. The Long Island Crisis Center offers 24-hour/seven-day-a-week crisis intervention counseling. Anyone who is depressed, needs help in controlling teenagers or wants to beat an addiction is encouraged to call (516) 679-1111. Calls are free and anonymous.
East Meadow Veterans Memorial Day Parade, sponsored by the East Meadow Veterans, will take place on Monday, May 26, rain or shine. The parade assembles in the parking lot of East Meadow High School parking field at 9:15 a.m. and begins promptly at 10 a.m. The parade proceeds south on Carman Avenue to Hempstead Turnpike, turning east to Prospect Avenue. All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti Dinner will be held on Sunday, June 8 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the East Meadow Firehouse at 197 East Meadow Avenue.
