Support groups
Alzheimer's support. The Bristal Assisted Living, 40 Merrick Ave., hosts an Alzheimer's disease support group for caregivers every second Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Call Pat Kiley at

Helping relatives of addicts. Relatives and friends who are suffering as a result of a loved one's battle with addition can now receive support via a hotline run by the Long Island Crisis Center, at (516) 481-4000. The Long Island Crisis Center is Long Island's longest running telephone crisis intervention center.
Substance help. Alcoholics Anonymous meetings held Thursdays and Alanon meetings held Sundays in the school cafeteria of St. Barnabas Church in Bellmore._All meetings start at 7:30 p.m.
Support for moms. The Sunrise Mothers' Center, a member-run, non-sectarian, non-profit organization in Bellmore, is dedicated to supporting the needs and experiences of mothers. The center provides discussion groups with child care on premises, active committee work, book groups, social activities for parents and children, and speakers on various topics.

Help for smokers. The Nassau County Department of Health, in collaboration with the New York State Smokers' Quitline, is sponsoring a program which offers four weeks of nicotine replacement therapy for smokers who want to quit. The therapy also known as "the patch" is available to medically-eligible county residents at no cost. To determine eligibility, residents should call the New York Smokers' Quitline at 1-866-697-8487, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and weekends from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information about the Health Department's Tobacco Cessation Program, call (516) 571-2022 weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Crisis counseling. The Long Island Crisis Center offers 24-hour/seven-day-a-week crisis intervention counseling. Anyone who is depressed, needs help in controlling teenagers or wants to beat an addiction is encouraged to call (516) 679-1111. Calls are free and anonymous.
Community Events
The Jewish experience. The Suburban Park Jewish Center, 400 Old Westbury Rd. in East Meadow is inviting the Jewish community to attend its weekly events on Friday evenings at 7 p.m. and Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. The congregation is now conducting a membership drive and Hebrew school registration for the 2007-2008 school year. Adult education. The East Meadow Jewish Center is offering the following adult classes in: Israeli Dancing; Hebrew Literacy; Exploring Jewish cultures of the Middle East and Europe from Biblical Times to the Expulsion from Spain and Portugal; Modern Approach to Bible-studying the book of Psalms; and Sunday breakfast with guest speakers. Auditions for teens. Nassau-Suffolk Performing Arts is holding auditions for teenagers interested in performing in the Wind Symphony, Concert Band, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble. Rehersals are on Saturday mornings from Oct. to May at East Meadow High School and concerts are performed at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. FD membership drive. The East Meadow Fire Department is now accepting applications for membership. The department is currently looking to fill positions as firefighter and medical technician. Sons of italy. The East Meadow local lodge, Edward J. Speno Lodge No. 2568, are calling on Italians and Italian Americans to join the largest men and women organization in America, the Order of Sons of Italy in America. This co-ed local lodge meets on the second Monday of every month at 7:30 p.m. at the Jewish school of culture center, 574 East Meadow Ave. in East Meadow. Kiwanis meetings. The_East Meadow Kiwanis, a chapter of the international charity organization, is always looking for new members. Those interested in joining are invited to come down to its meetings. The group meets every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Empress Diner, 2490 Hempstead Turnpike. Knights of pythias. The Knights of Pythias Alliance-East Meadow Lodge 774 is seeking new members to join its ranks. The Knights of Pythias is one of the most active fraternal organizations, chartered by the_United States Congress. This non-sectarian organization serves the community through a number of altruistic endeavors, including food baskets for the needy, donations to charitable organizations, anti-drug programs, and a host of other activities. Calling all vets. East Meadow VFW Post 2736 is always looking for new members. Those interested in joining should call Sal Pellegrino at (516) 794-5036 or mail to 290 Belmont Ave., East Meadow, NY 11554. Meetings are twice a month on the first and third Monday, and held at Christ the King Church.
Looking for host families. The STS Foundation, a not-for-profit student exchange program, is looking for host families in East Meadow to provide foreign exchange students with a place to stay. Families interested in hosting a foreign exchange student should call 1-800-522-4678.
Library Events
Jewish literature. The library will have a presentation on Jewish Literature beginning with a new topic Modern Marvels: Jewish Adventures in the Graphic Novel during the spring and summer. The sessions for this section will be held on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. The following meetings will be held on Aug. 21 and Sept. 18. Beginning in the fall, the library will present Your Heart's Desire: Sex and Love in Jewish Literature. These dates will soon be announced. The books for both series can be found outside the public relations office. Admission is free.
A time to laugh. Standup comedian Mark Brier will be providing an afternoon of laughs and fun on Aug. 16 at 1 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own jokes and take the mic. Admission is free.
The best sellers club. The library is now conducting a membership drive to its Best Sellers Club. By joining, members will be automatically placed on the reserve list for the latest fiction by their favorite authors. Simply select the authors you enjoy from the list on the library's Best Sellers form. When the newest publication from a member's author list arrives, the member will be notified. Art exhibit. The library will be presenting the Woodland Middle School Art Show for 15th consecutive year. Dr. John Healy, art teacher at Woodland, will bring the latest works of his students to the library's community room for an exhibit throughout the months of July and August. Admission is free.

Downloadable books now available. The library is now offering digital audiobooks for MP3 players. The books are being offered in conjunction with NetLibrary.com. Through the library's website, library patrons can download as many as 10 of the 1200 unabridged books offered by NetLibrary.

Chess. Every Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m., the Adult Chess Club meets at the library. All players should bring a board and chess set to the small conference room.
National poetry month. Marsha Nelson, of Hempstead, has published her first book of poetry, "All Rise, Stand Up, Holy Gates." She will be at the East Meadow Public Library on April 23, at 12:30 p.m. Visitors will read excerpts from her book and learn how it was published. For more information, call (516) 794-2570.
