Coleman ranks as the South Shore's largest day camp, serving hundreds of youngsters from throughout Merrick and Bellmore. In all, the camp attracts more than 900 children annually, ranging in age from 3 to 10-11. The tree-covered camp sits on 13 acres, with a host traditional summer activities from horseback riding, to swimming, arts and crafts, archery and sports.
George and Marla Coleman, who own the camp, are big supporters of local health initiatives, such as the Community Wellness Council of the Bellmores and Merrick annual Wellness Walk, for which they served as chief sponsors this spring.
The Herald dropped by the Coleman camp last Wednesday morning, July 3, for Red, White and Blue Day. Entertaining presentations about American history were offered for the children, as well as a midday barbecue, complete with hot dogs, potato chips and cola.
And of course, loads of fun.
