Calhoun is the Nassau Class A boys soccer champion!
The Colts lived up to their top seed and capped a tremendous three-game playoff run by knocking off upset-minded Port Washington in Tuesday's title game at Bethpage State Park, 1-0.
Junior Matt Avellino scored the game's only goal at the 24:29 mark of the second half, converting a smooth pass from senior Chris Maloy.
Avellino, who scored the winning goal in the Colts' 2-1 quarterfinal playoff victory over Great Neck South, pushed a low shot past Port Washington goalkeeper Andrew Levy and into the far side of the cage.
The Colts will face Suffolk champion East Islip 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Long Island Class A championship game at Bethpage.
"It was pretty much an even match-up, and both teams had plenty of opportunities," Calhoun coach Jim Cantley said after the game. "We split games with Port Washington during the regular season, and they really came on strong late in the year and in the playoffs. Today was the rubber match, and we knew it was going to be a battle."
The Vikings were seeded sixth in the playoff tournament and eliminated three teams on their way to the final: Hicksville, Massapequa and South Side.
