Memorial Day Next Monday, May 31, is Memorial Day. All federal, state, post, school and library offices will be closed. The Franklin Square parade begins at 9:30 a.m. at the VFW Hall on Lincoln Rd. The Elmont parade begins on School St. at 9 a.m.and will work its way to a ceremony at Veteran's Plaza.

Valmont Civic The Valmont Civic Association holds it's meetings on the first Monday of every month at the Elmont Public Library at 7:30 p.m.

Sons of Italy The Sons of Italy in America is seeking new members to join America Lodge #2245. Rabbi speaks On Tuesday evening, June 1, the Elmont Jewish Center Sisterhood will have as guest speaker Rabbi Stephen Polter, Rabbi at the Elmont Jewish Center, an accomplished attorney and Rabbi, who will discuss his book "From Bris to Barrister," a wonderful compilation of essays, exposes and dissertations about the most complex, critical and profound issues in life.The time is 8 p.m. All are welcome to attend for a refreshing and delightful evening. Poetry workshop Join us Tuesday, June 1 at 3:30 p.m. Dr. Opyr is the author of five collections of poetry and has been published in numerous journals and magazines. Participants in the workshop will have the opportunity to write poetry and share what they've written. Bring paper and pen and the desire to expand your knowledge and enjoyment of writing good poems!

Tax forum Join us on Thursday, June 3 at 7 p.m. for a tax forum with Donald X. Clavin, Jr., Receiver of Taxes. Mr. Clavin will be addressing issues such as property tax exeamptions, challenging your tax assessment, payment dates and locations, tax discounts and new tax bill design.

Lonesome Traveler Join us on Sunday, June 6 at 2 p.m. for a musical show about singer/songwriters Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Lee Hays. Lonesome Traveler, a new narrative musical about the legendary folk groups, The Weavers and The Almanacs, has 18 songs including "Tzana Tzana," "Goodnight Irene" and "If I Had a Hammer."
