JCC's gardening club

Get set for planting at The Gardening Club at the Barry and Florence Friedberg JCC, 15 Neil Court, Oceanside. The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month. From 11:30 a.m. noon is lunch (bring your own) and chat followed by programs from noon to 1 p.m. (noon to 1:30 p.m. for Cornell Cooperative Extension Horticulture Programs).

Library events



Archaeologist Denise Gold will explore the life of Herod, the biblical king of Judea in her program at the Oceanside Library March 23 at 2 p.m.

Herod, whose keen political sense kept him in power for more than 30 years, was an imperious king and capable general. His dynasty reigned in Palestine at the time of Jesus and is often blamed for the state's virtual anarchy at the beginning of the Christian era. Herod's later years were fraught with family intrigue and scandal, including the murders of his wife, sons and mother-in-law.

Liz Taylor program at library

Film afficianado Seena Edelman will lead a retrospective on one of the world's most beautiful women and popular screen personalities in the program "Elizabeth Taylor -- Almost Live" March 10 at 2 p.m. at the Oceanside Library.

An Oscar-winning actress, Taylor has lived most of her life in the spotlight, and her glamour and sensual charm are the stuff of legend. From her privileged childhood, her rise to stardom in such films as "National Velvet" and "Father of the Bride," to her husbands, her obsession with jewelry and her amazing resilience in the face of public scandals and personal tragedy, this program will show Taylor as both a talented actress and survivor.

Participants will also be able to play in Edelman's movie trivia game, where she reveals the secrets of the stars and their off-screen lives.

Library presents 'Magnificent Munchies'

Chef Lucien Veneziano will teach teens to prepare a finger food feast March 9 at 7 p.m. at the Oceanside Library, 30 Davison Ave.

Participation is limited to students in grades 7 to 12, and there is a $2 materials fee. Pre-registration is required.

The evening of cooking and eating will feature a variety of simple, quick and delicous snacks, including quesadillas, dips, spreads and more. Participants will also take home a collection of printed recipes.

Shabbat dinner

The Jewish Center of Island Park will participate in "Shabbat Across America" with a traditional Shabbat dinner March 4 at 6:30 p.m.

The public is invited to share this significant Shabbat with the congregation.

Thrift sale

Temple Avodah will hold a spring thrift sale March 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will feature "the best bargains in town" on gently used clothing and accessories for the family.

The sale will be held at the Temple Avodah Annex, 3050 Oceanside Road.

Yiddish 'Mikado'



Temple Israel of Long Beach will present "Der Yiddishe Mikado," a comic operetta in Yiddish and English based on the Mikado by Gilbert & Sullivan, performed by the Glibert & Sullivan Yiddish Light Opera Company of Long Island April 17 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $18 in advance; $20 at the door. The performance will be held at Temple Israel of Long Beach, 305 Riverside Boulevard in Long Beach. For more information, call (516) 432-1410.

AARPmeeting



The Oceanside AARP will meet March 18 at 1 p.m. at St. Anthony's Church, 180 Anchor Ave.

The program will include an overview of "what's new" for seniors and local trips. There will also be a performance by the Oceanside Middle School Swing Choir.

Collage art



"Collage Painting With Paper," a series of artworks by Baldwin resident Judy Feldman, will be on display at the Oceanside Library throughout March and April.

By skillfully integrating a wide range of printed material from magazine pages, Ms. Feldman has created a kaleidoscope of images, color, and subject matter that takes the original compositions and juxtaposes them to create a whole new world of dimension. Her work was previously exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, as part of student show, the Lever House, the Bryant Library in Roslyn, and has won awards at juried competitions through Nassau County.

A former art teacher, Ms. Feldman has studied at the Arts Students League and with C. W. Post Professor Paul Margin.

St. Paddy's Day



Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with popular singer, musician, and performer Greg Ryan and his step-dancing daughter, Katie, at the Oceanside Library on March 13 at 2 p.m.

Ryan will entertain with songs, music, and tales from the Emerald Isle while his young daughter Katie performs Irish step dancing using both hard and soft shoes for Irish jigs, hornpipes, and reels. Mr. Ryan will sing a selection of Irish tunes ranging from the classic "Come-All-Ye's" to songs in Gaelic, and will accompany himself on the guitar, banjo, harmonica, penny whistle, Irish wood flute, and the mandolin. In addition to his musical performance, this seasoned performer will leave you laughing with his tall tales, jokes, and amusing anecdotes.

Tickets will be distributed at the Information Desk beginning March 6 to Oceanside School District residents and March 10 to non-residents, if available. There is a limit of four tickets per person.

Sandwich sale



The First United Methodist Church of Oceanside, Atlantic Avenue and Davison Street, will hold a homemade soup/sandwich sale at 11:30 a.m. March 6.

Soup, sandwich and coffee will be sold at $5 per person. Soup to take home is $2.50 a pint and $5 a quart as long as it lasts. The church is wheelchair accessible. For further information call 766-3778.

Thrift sale



St. Andrew's Episcopal Church's thrift shop will have a grand re-opening March 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. The store is located at 50 Anchor Ave., behind Party Time, in Oceanside.
