Flea market. The Bellmore Lions Club is hosting a flea market in August to benefit local charities. The market will be held along the parking lot of Bellmore's Long Island Rail Road station from Bedford Avenue to Sunrise Highway on Sunday, Aug. 29, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information or to become a vendor, call (516) 785-0222 or 826-9839.
New member orientation. The Parents Without Partners Nassau Chapter will be having its new member orientation on Tuesday, Sept. 7, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Bellmore Presbyterian Church at Bellmore and Martin avenues in North Bellmore. The event is free, but membership is $39. To join, prospective members need the name and address of a licensed professional who can verify that they are single and have at least one child. In addition, the organization is sponsoring a Single Parent Dance at the Manor East, 201 Jerusalem Ave. in Massapequa on Friday, Sept. 10, from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Admission is $18. School board meeting. The North Bellmore Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Thursday, Sept. 9, at 8 p.m. at the district's headquarters at 216 Martin Ave. The board will meet at 7:30 p.m. and vote to go immediately into executive session to discuss personnel matters. Las Vegas night. The Bellmore Knights of Columbus will hold its annual Las Vegas Night fund-raiser on Friday, Sept. 10, from 8 p.m. to midnight. Free admission. For more information, call john Ruggiero at (516) 826-0738.
Octoberfest. The Bellmore Council of the Knights of Columbus is holding an Octoberfest in September at the Columbus Club building, which is at 2325 Bellmore Ave. The event is scheduled to take place on Sunday, Sept. 12, from 4 to 8 p.m. With a $25 fee, participants can enjoy an open bar with German beer, and an array of German dishes that include: bratwurst, knockwurst, smoked ham, German-style potato salad and struedel. Commemorative Journal. The Long Island Crisis Center is publishing its annual commemorative journal for its volunteers. The center is celebrating 33 years of selfless service and is looking for interested businesses or individuals to place ads in this year's edition. The money raised by the ads will be used to support client services, including depression, isolation, fear, substance abuse, teen suicide and family discord counseling. Time for Two. The Sunrise Mothers' Center's Time for Two program is now enrolling students for the fall 2004 semester, which will begin on Monday, Sept 13. The program is affiliated with the Sunrise Mothers' Center, a non-profit organization celebrating more than 25 years as a resource for mothers in the community. Pancake breakfast. The Bellmore Lions Club is holding its annual pancake breakfast on Sunday, Oct. 10. It is soliciting $25 placement ads from the community, which entitle the buyer to two tickets for the event. The breakfast will be held at the Knights of Columbus hall on Bellmore Avenue. Bellmore Library
Art exhibit. The Bellmore Library will be displaying expressionist paintings by local artist Erica Fairful at the library's community room during Augus.
Library card sign up. Anyone who does not have a library card is encouraged to sign up at the Bellmore Library during its September National Library Card sign up month. College programs. All college-bound students can register for a free library sponsored two-part SATprogram presented by Kaplan. In the first part, students can see how well they do on a SATpractice test on Saturday, Sept. 18, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. The second part will review the exam, and allow students and their parents to go over the exam and discuss their results. N. Bellmore Library
Reading club. The library's Children's Services Department will again offer a Summer Reading Club. This year's state-wide theme is Read, White and Blue! Children, ages 3 to 12, may register at the reference desk. To enter, children must read or have read to them 10 books and list them on their reading charts. North Bellmore School District residents will be given preference when enrolling in the program. Parents can only register their own children. Bring your library card when registering. Fosse. On Wednesday, Sept. 1, the North Bellmore Library will attend a special showing of Fosseat the Patchogue Theatre. The show is a special journey of song and dance through choreographer Bob Fossi's extraordinary career. There will be full production numbers from Cabaret, Sweet Charity, Pajama game, Chicago, All that Jazz and more. Lunch will be at the Bellport Country Club with a choice of sliced steak, broiled salmon, or chicken cordon bleu, salad, pasta course, dessert and coffee or tea. A bus will leave from the library parking lot at 10 a.m. and will return at approximately 5:15 p.m. The cost of the trip is $68, which is payable by check to the North Bellmore Public Library, which includes: theatre ticket, lunch, bus transportation and all gratuities.
