Jump Start In a program first required three years ago by the NYS Education Department, the Valley Stream High School District is offering "Project Jump Start" this summer as an orientation to ELL (English Language Learners) in grades 7-12 who are moving into the district from other countries. The two-week free program, to be held at Valley Stream North High School on Herman Avenue in Franklin Square, where the ESL (English as a Second Language) program is offered during the school year, will take place during the weeks of August 23 and 30, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m.-12 noon. The purpose of the "Jump Start" program is to provide students new to this country with an opportunity to become familiar with their new language, new school and the social/ academic setting before the school year starts. The program is free, but transportation is not provided to North High School. To register, please call the ESL Coordinator at North High School's main office, 564-5510.
Bowling league The Elmont Jewish Center Sisterhood Bowling League is looking for bowlers, both men and women, of all ages for their winter league starting in Sept. The league is non-sectarian and welcomes all on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at Bellrose Lanes. Call Jean at 775-5078 for more.

McCarthy speaks The Franklin Square Jewish Center retirees has announced that Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, Member of Congress will address them on Tuesday, September 7. Their meeting will begin at 10:30 AM in the Center's Social Hall. All are welcome. Blood drive The Franklin Square Lions club is sponsoring the second of its three annual blood drives on Wednesday, September 1, at the VFW Hall, 68 Lincoln Road, Franklin Square, from 3:30 pm. to 9:00 p.m. To make this successful, we need your help. Old time hockey, coach!Carey High School Icehawks hockey tryouts will be held at Iceland Ice Rink on Hillside Avenue in New Hyde Park on Monday, Aug. 30 from 6-7:30 p.m. and Wednesday, Sept. 1 from 6-7:30 p.m. Tryouts are open to all H. Frank Carey students, private school students districted for Carey or West Hempstead whose private school does not field an ice hockey team, any 6th graders attending John, Polk or Washington Street elementary schools, any West Hempstead School District students in grades 6 through 11 only for either the middle school or JV team. The cost for the tryouts is $75 for all three sessions payable the first session. Please make checks payable to "Icehawks Hockey." Health assessments June Friedel, R.N., will help identify problems associated with blood pressure, weight control and medication monitoring. She will be available to answer individual questions and for one-on-one counseling. Sponsored by the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs, this is an ongoing program held the third Thursday of each month. Join us on Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. for this month's session.
Grandparents talking Every month, grandparents gather to share experiences and recognize when and how to intervene, under the guidance of Beatrice Nechin, BSSW, of the Nassau County Dept. of Senior Citizen Affairs. Join us on Friday, Aug. 27 at 11 a.m. and become a partner in our ongoing open discussion group. A meditation/discussion group at 9:30 a.m. will precede the support group.

Closings The Elmont Public Library will be closed on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Labor Day Weekend. The library will reopen again on Sundays beginning September 12. The Library will be open on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. beginning September 11.

Gain information and assistance with applications for benefits and entitlements. The Fair will provide blood pressure screening, food stamp, EPIC and HEAP applications, health insurance and financial counseling, legal, housing and consumer information, Medicare and Medicaid assistance, services for Veterans and the physically challenged, Social Security information, and volunteer and employment opportunities.
