Flea market. The Bellmore Lions Club is hosting three flea markets in August to benefit local charities. Board meetings. The Bellmore School District Board of Education is holding its next meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 10 at 8 p.m. at 580 Winthrop Ave. The North Bellmore School District is holding its next meeting on Thursday, Aug. 12 at 8 p.m. at the Martin Avenue School, 2616 Martin Ave.
Civic meeting. The North Bellmore Board of Education will hold its regular monthly meeting on Thursday, Aug. 12, at 8 p.m. The meeting will take place at the Martin Avenue School, 2616 Martin Ave. in Bellmore. For more information, call (516) 992-3000.
Street fair. The Suburban Temple Brotherhood is sponsoring its eighth annual Jerusalem Avenue Street Fair on Sunday, Aug. 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be more than 100 quality vendors, including local merchants offering discounted prices and specials. Commemorative Journal. The Long Island Crisis Center is publishing its annual commemorative journal for its volunteers. The center is celebrating 33 years of selfless service and is looking for interested businesses or individuals to place ads in this year's edition. The money raised by the ads will be used to support client services, including depression, isolation, fear, substance abuse, teen suicide and family discord counseling. Time for Two. The Sunrise Mothers' Center's Time for Two program is now enrolling students for the fall 2004 semester, which will begin on Monday, Sept 13. The program is affiliated with the Sunrise Mothers' Center, a non-profit organization celebrating more than 25 years as a resource for mothers in the community. Bellmore Library
Art exhibit. The Bellmore Library will be displaying expressionist paintings by local artist Erica Fairful at the library's community room during August.
Fact or fiction. Health and Wellness instructor Max Fleurival will speak at the library on Thursday, Aug. 5, at 7 p.m. Fleurival will offer health tips.
Defensive driving. There will be a safe-driving class given by Steve Schwartz on Thursdays, Aug. 19 and 26, from 7 to 10 p.m. The course fee is $35.
Free computers classes. The Bellmore Memorial Library is offering Computer Kindergarten classes for adults. The course offers a basic, hands-on computer class for those who have little or no previous experience with a computer, a mouse, or the Internet. The class will be held on Thursday, Aug. 12, from 10 a.m. to noon. There will be a hands-on desktop publishing class on Thursday, Aug. 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. Learn how to use MsWord to create greeting cards, letter head, newsletters and more.
Pizza making. The Bellmore Memorial Library will be providing kids the opportunity to be pizza-makers for a day. Tom Valenti, owner of Piccolo Restaurant, 2770 Sunrise Highway in Bellmore, will hold his annual and Pizza Making Workshop on Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 6 p.m. There are still a few seats available for teens between sixth and 12th grade. Registration is $3 and covers materials. Advanced registration is required. All participants will be given cake and soda at the end of the program.

Reading club. The library's Children's Services Department will again offer a Summer Reading Club. This year's state-wide theme is Read, White and Blue! Children, ages 3 to 12, may register at the reference desk. To enter, children must read or have read to them 10 books and list them on their reading charts. North Bellmore School District residents will be given preference when enrolling in the program. Parents can only register their own children. Bring your library card when registering. Book discussion. On Monday, Aug. 16, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Sara Jane Berman will hold a book discussion on "Galileo's Daughter" by Dava Sobel. According to Berman, the book tells the story of this famous astronomer and his eldest daughter, Sister Maria Celeste, whose adopted name was a tribute to her father's fascination with the heavens. Her 124 surviving letters to her father are the basis for the book, and show her emotional support during Galileo's trial before the inquisition for arguing that the Earth moves around the sun.
Defensive driving. The North Bellmore Public Library is offering a defensive-driving course this summer on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 23 and 24, from 6 to 9 p.m. Anyone interested in taking the course should register at the library's reference desk. There is a $35 registration fee. The fee should be paid by check or money order, and made out to "3-D Insurance Services."
Tales and more. Boys and girls, ages 5 to 8, may register to attend Summer Tales and more every Tuesday through Aug. 24, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. There will be stories, games, show-and-tell, jokes and much more.
Book Olympics. In conjunction with the Summer Olympics, the library is holidng a Summer Book Olympics on Wednesday, Aug. 25 at 2 p.m. Children ages 7 through 12 are invited to try and identify titles and authors of books based on simple questions. Teams will be chosen at random and prizes will be awarded. In-person registration will begin on Monday, Aug. 16.
AARP 55-Alive. Registration for the AARP 55 - Alive driving courses is ongoing. Register at the library's reference desk and bring a check for $10 made payable to AARP.
