Retirement talk The Franklin Square Jewish Center Retirees have announced that Bruce Beaver, the former publicist for the Franklin Hospital and the Franklin Square Chamber of Commerce, will address them at their Tuesday, July 27 meeting. His topic will be "Retirement Activities." The meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Center's Social Hall. All are welcome. The Franklin Square Jewish Center is one block north of Hempstead Turnpike and one block west of New Hyde Park Road - Franklin Avenue intersection. West Point Band The U.S. Military Academy has announced a change of date for its annual free West Point Band Concert at the John M. Smith Bandshell on the Valley Stream Village Green. The new date has been moved up to Thursday, August 5, at 8 p.m. The concert, as always, will showcase the finest in military band repertoire and spirited, toe-tapping music. Concertgoers need to bring a lawn chair to the Village Green, which is located on Valley Stream Blvd., behind Village Hall and the Waldinger Library. If it rains on August 5, the concert will be held in Central High School's Keller Auditorium on Fletcher Avenue.
Jump Start In a program first required three years ago by the NYS Education Department, the Valley Stream High School District is offering "Project Jump Start" this summer as an orientation to ELL (English Language Learners) in grades 7-12 who are moving into the district from other countries. The two-week free program, to be held at Valley Stream North High School on Herman Avenue in Franklin Square, where the ESL (English as a Second Language) program is offered during the school year, will take place during the weeks of August 23 and 30, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m.-12 noon. The purpose of the "Jump Start" program is to provide students new to this country with an opportunity to become familiar with their new language, new school and the social/ academic setting before the school year starts. Kids Art Spend your summer days creatively. Join Creative Art Space for Kids in Lynbrook for a summer filled with artful adventures. DRAWING & PAINTING - POTTERY/SCULPTURE - MIXED MEDIA: Students will be introduced to working with acrylic paints, pastels, pottery/clay and other various materials. In-depth art projects in will be encouraged for the term of the session. Students work with their imaginations with emphasis placed on developing, expressing and celebrating their own personal artistic style. This is a 6 week program: starting July 8- August 13 (12 classes) on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for ages 5-12. Tai Chi Join us on Friday, August 13 at 10:30 a.m. for a tai chi class led by Rene Harris and Bob Janowsky of the Chen School of Taiqui. The classes will be followed by meditation. Family literacy Nassau BOCES Adult Learning Center has developed a FREE program designed to help families improve their English language skills and learn about their community and country.
