Historical Women of Distinction, an exhibit showcasing some of New York's historic women, will be at the library from August 1 to August 7. The exhibit will honor suffragists to geneticists and labor organizers to entertainers, as well as State Senator Dean Skelos' 2004 Woman of Distinction, Kathy Ballesteros, an employee at Circulo de la Hispanidad.
Gospel Explosion The Third Annual Gospel Explosion, one of the liveliest celebrations of faith, friends and family in Kennedy Plaza on Sunday, August 8 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Food, dance, poetry, vendors, and music that will make you clap your hands and stomp your feet. The 2004 Boardwalk Concert Series will continue on August 5 when John Inella and the New Yorkers hit Neptune Beach. Real Hotlanta will be at National Beach on August 7. Paddy Noonan will rock New York Beach on August 10. Tribute to Benny Goodman will roll in on Neptune Beach on August 12, and Turnpike Joe will perform on National Beach on August 14. All concerts start at 8 p.m.
Temple Emanu-El will be hosting a discussion group for Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" every Tuesday in August from 1-3 p.m.
17th Annual Antique and Classic Car Show will roll in to Kennedy Plaza on Sunday, A ugust 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.. Cars will line the parking malls and parade down to Riverside Boulevard at 11:00 a.m.
Continue your education take a class at the Long Beach Adult Learning Center at 75 East Walnut St. in Long Beach. The center offers classes in basic education, English as a second language, citizenship preparation, pronunciation and accent reduction, English at home and computer ed. The Harriet Eisman Community School of Long Beach REACH will be hosting its annual Student/Faculty Art and Photography Show and Reception on Thursday, August 12 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the second floor art gallery. The show will remain on exhibit until August 29.
Dream, with teenaged singing sensation Michelle Moore on Saturday, August 14 at 2 p.m. Moore will sing classics like "Never, Never Land" and "On My Own."
Eileen Pollis, lyric soprano, will sing selections from opera, operetta and Broadway. Pollis will be joined by her sister, Patricia Ponte, also a soprano. On Saturday, August 7 at 2 p.m.

Safe Sitter Program, offered by LBMC, takes place on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It is a one-day seminar for youths age 11 to 13, designed to teach the basics of childcare and safety. Nightwatch The Nightwatch Hotline in Long Beach offers crisis counseling and referral to callers from all over the area, free of charge. Hotline hours are Sunday-Thursday from 6-11 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Call 889-2332.
Diabetes Club meets the third Monday each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Goldstein Auditorium at LBMC. Topics include nutritional management, medications, eye and foot care, exercise and more.

Bereavement Support On Thursdays from 2:30 to 3:30 P.M. in Conference Room C at Long Beach Medical Center. The Medical Center's Counseling Center will offer a weekly bereavement support group for individuals dealing with the death of a family member or loved one. Senior Spotlight

P.A.C.E. Members of the Barry and Florence Friedberg JCC, 310 National Blvd., Long Beach enjoy the benefits of music and dance through our P.A.C.E program. People with Arthritis Can Dance, helps those with arthritis enjoy movement and helps to alleviate some of the stiffness that comes with arthritis. Lisa Wisel, MS, ADTR, CLM, a registered Dance/Movement therapist, leads the class. It meets every Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

The Long Beach Animal Shelter welcomes volunteers for socializing with abandoned pets. Dog-walkers are welcome. Additionally there are dozens of cats and dogs who are eager to brighten your home and your life. The shelter is open for extended adoption hours from 5 to 7:30 p.m., in addition to regular 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. hours. The shelter is located at 770 Park Place in Long Beach.
