Open House. The Mothers' Center of Southwest Nassau is hosting an Open House from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, August 24. Come see what our motto of "Mothers Helping Mothers" is all about. The Mothers' Center offers discussion groups for mothers where they can find support and validation. The introductory group is called "Transitions into Motherhood" Child care is available during the discussion groups. Team Tennis for kids ages 13-18 Must know how to keep score, serve and have fun. Play against other Nassau County towns, run by the United States Tennis Association,the Village of Malverne and School District 12. No residency requirement. Get In the Swim.The American Red Cross in Nassau County (ARC/Nassau) encourages swimmers 12 years of age and older to join in its 15th Annual Swim-A-Cross on Friday, August 20, at Centre Island Beach in Bayville. The Swim-A-Cross is a one-mile swim across Oyster Bay Harbor. All proceeds will benefit local ARC/Nassau services, including disaster relief and lifesaving programs in health and safety.
Book Discussion. The West Hempstead Chapter of Hadassah will hold a book discussion get together on Wednesday, Aug. 25 at 1 p.m. at the West Hempstead Library, 252 Chestnut St. The book to be discussed is "The Reader," by Bernhard Schlink, and is available at local libraries. Cruise and Fireworks. On Wednesday, Aug. 18, bus pick up at 3:15 p.m. at the library. Trip begins with a buffet at The Master Grill, then on to a four-hour sunset cruise along Long Island's gold Coast on a three-level yacht, featuring a bar and dance band. The evening ends with a fireworks display. The bus returns to the library around midnight. A $74 check is payable to the library at registration.
Summer Movie. On Friday, August 27 at 1:30 p.m. In "Osama," a 12-year-old Afghan girl and her mother lose their jobs when the Taliban closes the hospital where they work. Feeling she has no choice, the mother disguises her daughter as a boy. Now called Osama, the girl embarks on a terrifying and confusing journey as she tries to keep the Taliban from finding out her real identity. Inspired by a true story. English subtitles. Summer Reading Club. Children ages 3 to entering fifth grade are invited to join the Summer Reading Club: New York is Read, White & Blue at the Children's Room. West Hempstead patrons may register beginning Monday, June 21, and non-residents may register beginning July 5 while spots are available. Hundreds of children visit the library every summer for prizes, guessing games, and good books. This year, there will be a magic show, machine making and special programs for kids under 3. Read five books by Aug. 12 a receive an invitation to a special end-of-summer show.
