Take and Make Crafts. The library invites children ages 3 to entering kindergarten to come in during the months of July and August to receive a craft to make at home. One per month per child while supplies last. Baldwin residents only. Come to the Children's Reference Desk for the craft.

Sunset and Fireworks Cruise. This year's fireworks won't end with the Fourth of July. The library is sponsoring a trip on Wednesday, Aug. 18, that begins with a buffet extravaganza and continues on to a four-hour sunset cruise along Long Island's Gold Coast aboard a 120-foot, fully enclosed, three-level yacht, which will feature a live band with dancing. The grand finale is a half hour fireworks display over Rye Playland. The cost of the trip is $69 per person. Registration begins Wednesday, July 21 at the Adult Reference Desk. The first day is for residents of the Baldwin School District only. Tickets are non-refundable. The bus leaves at 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 18 and the approximate return time is midnight.

Read-to-Me Club. For children age three through kindergarten with a parent or caregiver. Read as many books at home with your child by August 27 and receive a prize and certificate. Registration is necessary and will begin June 7.

Read, White & Blue. Summer reading program for boys and girls in grades 1 to 6 and another club for those in grades 7 to 12. This year's theme is "New York is Read, White & Blue." Kids will read books at home and report on the books to earn prizes. Registration begins June 7. For five weeks beginning on July 5, take-home craft kits will be available to kids in grades 1 to 6 when reporting on a book. Surprise gift for kids in grades 7 to 12 at registration. An invitation to an awards ceremony and magic show will be given to those who complete the club's reading requirements.

Summer Hours. The Library will start its summer schedule beginning Friday, July 2. The Library will be open on fridays, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. through Labor Day, September 6. The Library will be closed on Sundays through September 26.

BCC Picnic The Baldwin Chamber of Commerce will host its 9th Annual Picnic on Sunday, July 18, from noon to 4 p.m. at Baldwin Park. Hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza and cold drinks will be served, in addition to face painting and games for kids. There will also be pony rides, courtesy of the Baldwin Herald, and a show featuring the G-string Band. Bring the family, friends and an umbrella and chair to enjoy the festivities.

Sanitation Meeting Sanitary District No. 2 has cancelled its July 21, 2004 Board of Commissioners meeting in lieu of a special meeting to be held on Monday, July 19, at 5 p.m. at the district office, 2080 Grand Avenue. The meeting will cover the regular business of Sanitary District No. 2 and the review of petitions for candidates for commissioner, the election to be held on Thursday, July 29. The schedule then returns to the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month with the next regularly scheduled meeting on Aug. 4 at 5 p.m.

Summer Art Classes for Kids. Spend your summer days creatively. Join Creative Art Space for Kids in Lynbrook for a summer filled with artful adventures. DRAWING & PAINTING - POTTERY/SCULPTURE - MIXED MEDIA: Students will be introduced to working with acrylic paints, pastels, pottery/clay and other various materials. In-depth art projects in will be encouraged for the term of the session. Students work with their imaginations with emphasis placed on developing, expressing and celebrating their own personal artistic style. Ezra Center. Do you have a child who needs to build their social skills? Groups are available right in your neighborhood at the Ezra Center for People With Disabilities located at the Barry and Florence Friedberg JCC. This winter the Ezra Center is offering a number of programs for children (with ADHD; ADD; Aspergers; PDD; Autism; Learning Disabilities; and, Speech & Language Delays). Programs include arts and crafts, aquatics, and lessons on building physical and social skills. An interview is required for proper placement. Athletes needed. The Barry and Florence Friedberg JCC is forming its JCC Maccabi Team for the 2004 JCC Maccabi Games being held in Boston from August 15-20. The JCC Maccabi games are an Olympic-style event for athletes of Jewish Heritage. Delegations come from Israel, Canada, Poland, Mexico, and from all over the United States. Athletes enjoy high level competition as well as cultural and social events. The JCC is holding tryouts for roller hockey and boys basketball.Athletes must turn 13 by Aug. 1 and cannot turn 17 before Aug. 1. Hockey tryouts will be held Thursday, Feb. 12 & 19; Basketball tryouts take place Monday, Feb. 9 & 16.
