This Weekend



St. Mary of the Isle's International Festival will run from Thursday through Sunday, July 15-18. Located at Monroe Boulevard and East Park Avenue, there will be four evenings of rides, games, food and a Las Vegas section for of-age risk takers. Call 432-0157, ext. 10 for more information.

LBMC's Annual Family Health Festival will hit the boardwalk at Riverside Boulevard on Sunday, July 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free screenings for hypertension, cholesterol, diabetes, hearing and osteoperosis will be offered, as well as health education and information on how to achieve a healthier lifestyle. The 2004 Boardwalk Concert Series will continue on July 15 with High Tide at Neptune Beach. The Denise Givens Band will be at National Beach on July 17.Risky Business will rock New York Beach on July 20. North Shore Pops will roll in on Neptune Beach on July 22, and Valley Blues will perform on National Beach on July 24. All concerts start at 8 p.m.

Temple Israel Sisterhood's open meeting on Monday, July 19 at 7:30 p.m. The film "The Producers will be shown with a $3.00 donation. Refreshments will be served. Call 432-1410.

Continue your education take a class at the Long Beach Adult Learning Center at 75 East Walnut St. in Long Beach. The center offers classes in basic education, English as a second language, citizenship preparation, pronunciation and accent reduction, English at home and computer ed. The center offers both day and evening classes and is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Monday to Wednesday in the evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. For more info call 897-2233.

"In the Mood," the sounds of the big bands, will hit the library on Saturday, July 17 at 2 p.m. Presented by We Three, "Naomi, Joel and Jed," will perform with five instruments and voice the sounds of Dixieland, Ragtime, classic ballads and lively show tunes.

Identity theft is America's fastest growing crime, affecting over 200,000 people and costing more than $2 billion. Jim Reed, Deputy Commissioner of the Office of Consumer Affairs, will present an in-depth course on how to protect yourself on Wednesday, July 21 at 2 p.m. Reed will also discuss other frauds and scams and what his office does to protect consumers.

Singer/guitarist Vince Donohue will bring his high energy rock tunes to the library on Saturday, July 24 at 2 p.m. Listen to originals off his new album, "River."

Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare's classic tale of doomed young love, will be performed by Plaza Theatrical Productions on Saturday, July 31 at 2 p.m.

Reading Road Trip USA Grab a suitcase and start your reading road trip at the library for the summer. Kids of all ages will get a packet with prizes and activities to bring along on their trip. Children in grades kindergarten and up can register at the library through July 30.

Safe Sitter Program, offered by LBMC, takes place on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It is a one-day seminar for youths age 11 to 13, designed to teach the basics of childcare and safety. Nightwatch The Nightwatch Hotline in Long Beach offers crisis counseling and referral to callers from all over the area, free of charge. Hotline hours are Sunday-Thursday from 6-11 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Call 889-2332.

Diabetes Club meets the third Monday each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Goldstein Auditorium at LBMC. Topics include nutritional management, medications, eye and foot care, exercise and more.

Nar-Anon is for anyone who has known a feeling of desperation concerning the drug addiction problem of someone near to them. Meetings every Thursday at 7:45 p.m. at the Island Park United Methodist Church, 364 Long Beach Road., Island Park, across from the Post Office.

Anxiety and Depression screenings are offered for free at LBMC's Counseling Center. Wednesdays from 2 to 3 p.m. Includes an interview with a mental health professional. Pre-registration not required. Call 897-1270.

Bereavement Support On Thursdays from 2:30 to 3:30 P.M. in Conference Room C at Long Beach Medical Center. The Medical Center's Counseling Center will offer a weekly bereavement support group for individuals dealing with the death of a family member or loved one. This free support group will be led by a mental health professional. For information, call 897-1270.

Senior Spotlight



Beginners meditation is held on Wednesdays, 2-3 p.m. at the Long Beach Senior/Community Center with Lisa Wisel. Wisel also conducts Dance/Movement Therapy on Wednesdays and Fridays 1-2 p.m. Call 431-3510 for more info.

P.A.C.E. Members of the Barry and Florence Friedberg JCC, 310 National Blvd., Long Beach enjoy the benefits of music and dance through our P.A.C.E program. People with Arthritis Can Dance, helps those with arthritis enjoy movement and helps to alleviate some of the stiffness that comes with arthritis. Lisa Wisel, MS, ADTR, CLM, a registered Dance/Movement therapist, leads the class. It meets every Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Fitness for older adults is every Friday at 9:05 a.m. at the Long Beach Public Library. Magda Rosenberg, exercise physiologist, conducts a series of physical fitness routines. Please check with your doctor before participating in this or any exercise program.

9/11 Help Project Liberty, a free, confidential program providing support, education and referral to anyone having difficulty coping with the events of Sept. 11 is available at the Long BeachMedical Center. For individual or group appointments, call 897-2295.
