Summer internship. High school and college students interested in participating in a summer non-paid internship with the Nassau County Legislature should contact Legislator David Denenberg's office at (516) 571-6219, or e-mail him at david.denenberg@mail.co.nassau.ny.us. This is a good opportunity for students interested in working with government.

Yard sale. Animal Lifeline, a local non-profit animal rescue organization based in the Merrick-Bellmore area, will hold its 16th Annual Save the Strays Yard Sale on May 29, 30 and 31, from 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. The event will take place at 2492 Central Parkway in Merrick (off Merrick Road, adjacent to Dunkin' Donuts). All proceeds will go directly to the group's spay/neuter program. Anyone wishing to donate items can call Sheila at (516) 867-2545. All donations are tax-deductible. Owing to space limitations, no clothing or books can be accepted. In addition, Animal Lifeline needs old outdoor tables and sawhorses. Volunteers to help set-up and sell are always welcomed.

Annual picnic. Parents Without Partners, Nassau Chapter 14, Inc., will be having its annual Jimmy Natoli Memorial Day Picnic. The event will take place on Monday, May 31, from 11 a.m. till dusk at Cedar Creek Park, field 6, on Merrick Road in Wantagh. The picnic is open to the public, free admission. BYO food and beverages. Driving workshop. Nassau County Legislator David Denenberg and Empire Safety Council will hold a defensive-driving workshop forlocal constituents at Denenberg's district office at 2818 Merrick Road Bellmore. Upon completion of the six-hour workshop, drivers will receive a 10 percent reduction on their vehicle's liability, personal injury protection and collision insurance policy for the next three years. In addition, course participants will be able to reduce up to four traffic violation points on their licenses. There will be two sessions available: Session I on Wednesday, June 9, and Thursday, June 10, from 6 to 9 p.m.; and Season II on Tuesday, June 15 and Thursday, June 17, from 6 to 9 p.m. The sessions cost $39 per person. Flea market. The Bellmore Lions Club will hold a Flea Market fundraiser on the following dates: Sundays, June 6, 13, and 20, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The market will be held at the Long Island Rail Road Station at Bedford Avenue and Sunrise Highway. The fundraiser will go to the benefit of local charities. On sale will be antiques, collectibles and handicrafts. For information on becoming a vendor, call (516) 785-0222 or 826-9839.

Arts festival. On Saturday, June 5, from 1 to 5 p.m., Jacob Gunther Elementary will host the third annual Creative Arts Festival. Residents attending the event will be treated to art and drama presentations.

50s music. The Bellmore Knights of Columbus is offering a night of reflection, titled "How Music Sounded in the 50's." The event will be held on Saturday, June 12, from 8 p.m. to midnight. There will be a live band playing some favorite oldies. The cost for the event is $27 per person, which covers open bar, salads, food and beverages.

Anyone interested should make their reservations by calling (516) 799-4563 no later than June 15. The event will take place at Bellmore Knights of Columbus building at 2523 Bellmore Ave.

Bellmorites honored. The Annual Republican Committeeman's Brunch will be held on Sunday, June 23, at 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Bellmore. This year, the following local Bellmorites will be honored: Josephine Maggio, John Podolski, Bill Sette and Roy Weinman. For more information and tickets, call (516) 783-0330.

Mammography testing. On Wednesday, June 30, the van for the mammography testing will be at the North Bellmore Library parking lot at Newbridge Road and Bellmore Avenue. Testing will be done between 8:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. by appointment only.

Bus trips.
There will be a bus trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Wednesday, June 30, to see the exhibited works of Chile Hassam. The cost is $23 per person and bus is scheduled to leave at 8:30 a.m. from the Mar Thoma parking lot in Merrick. A summer bus trip to the Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor is being planned for Wednesday, July 28. The cost for the trip is $56 per person, and the show is called "Auntie Mame," with Charles Busch. Anyone interested should sign up at the reference desk of the Bellmore Memorial Library or the Merrick Library.

Art exhibit. This month the Bellmore Library will be displaying watercolor, ink, crayon and postels by Honey Smallman of Woodbury. Her works usually uses colors found in nature and she has devised a method of constructing three-dimensional art that she says, "is like putting the pieces of a puzzle together to create a painting.

Defensive driving. The next available defensive driving course will be given on Tuesday and Thursday, July 6 and 8, from 6 to 9 p.m. Anyone interested in attending should register at the Reference Desk with a check of $35 made payable to "3-D Insurance Services."

Used book sale. The North Bellmore will hold a fund-raiser book sale in its library's community room on Saturday, June 12 and Sunday, June 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Donations will be accepted beginning May 1. All books should be clean and sealed. All donations must be brought to the Reference Desk.

AARP 55-Alive. Registration for the AARP 55 - Alive driving courses is ongoing. Register at the library's reference desk and bring a check for $10 made payable to AARP.
